Shakespeare's Layout of Tragedies:

5 fun facts about Shakespeare/his pieces

Elements of tragedies:

  • Serious themes and motifs
  • Death is important
  • Consists of a tragic hero with a fatal flaw

Elements of comedies:

  • Comedic language
  • Plot twists
  • Mistaken identities
  • Love obstacles
  • Weddings or reunions

Elements of histories:

  • Propaganda for Shakespearean current events
  • Contains a real English figure from history
  • Embellishment of plot & characters

Shakespeare's tragedies must end in some sort of tremendous catastrophe. The hero in the tragedy must have a fatal flaw that will interest us in the character so that we care for his fate more than anything else throughout the play.

1. Shakespeare & his playwrights earned little to no money from publication; most of the money came from on stage performances.

His comedies usually contain elements such as puns and metaphors. A typical ending to the play occurs with some type of reunion or marriage. Comedies also contain complicated plots, with miscellaneous plot twists to keep the audience hooked.

Shakespeare's histories have a historical monarch as the main character. His histories were meant for social propaganda during this time, instead of the typical documentary.
