Radical Republican Reconstruction

Lincoln's plan was rejected by the Radical Republicans in Congress because it did not protect people who were slaves or keep Southern Confederate leaders from regaining power and wanted half of the state population to swear an oath of loyalty.

  • Johnson's plan for Presidential Reconstruction wanted to re-unify the nation. It was more lenient towards Southerners in which states could come back into the United States once the 13th Amendment was ratified.
  • His plan did not require harsh rules to protect former slaves which caused the Southern states to pass Black Codes
  • Andrew Johnson became the 17th president after Lincoln was assassinated
  • During his presidency he continued to plan to start the Presidential Reconstruction.
  • Congress forced the Southern states to reapply for admission to the Union and create and secure rights for newly freed slaves.
  • The government of the Southern states included African Americans.
  • 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments gave African Americans in the South protection
