The History of Radioactivity

What is Radioactivity?

Radioactivity happens when atoms with unstable nuclei decompose into atoms with stable nuclei. This process of decomposition is radioactivity.

The new concept of the Nucleus was proposed

In todays times we have and use radioactivity in alot of places. Its in our cell phones. Its used to cure cancer. Its used to produce energy. The advances in this field have been incredible since it was first discovered.

Novemeber 24,1910, Ernest Rutherford a New Zealand physicist explored the atom using radioactivity. Rutherford came to the conclusion that the atom is mostly empty space. All of the mass along with the positively charged atoms is in the center. This became known as the Nucleus.

In 1930

Charles Lauritsen develops high-voltage x-ray machine for radiation therapy.

In 1938

Otto Hahn is the first to split the atom of uranium, opening up the possibility of a chain reaction

Marie and Pierre Curie

In 1942

The Manhattan Project is formed to secretly build the atomic bomb.

In 1923 the practice of radiology is approved from medicinal purposes but limiting the practice to professionals.

In 1945

First atomic bomb is exploded in the desert near Alamagordo, New Mexico. The second bomb "Little Boy" was dropped on the Japanese city Hiroshima and the third "Fat Boy" soon followed being dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki.

Marie and her husband began to wonder why uranium produced Baquerel rays

She investigated to see if any other elements gave of the same rays. She discovered that thorium gave off similar rays. Marie also discovered two new elements radium and polonium.

In 1956

In 1913 Hans Geiger unveils his radiation detector the Geiger counter

A National Academy of Sciences Committee issues a report asserting no safe threshold for radiation exposure. The report condemns the excessive use of x-rays in medical and dental practices, exposures to pregnant women, and people being fitted for shoes. Former AEC official, John C. Bugher, declares at an American Public Health Association meeting that an atomic power program would present a much greater health threat than nuclear weapons, due to large quantities of radioactive chemicals emitted into the environment during power generation.

In 1958

When was it discovered

United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation declares that fallout from nuclear bombs is harmful to human health.

Radioactivity was discovered on January 24,1896

Who and how it was discovered

Henri Bacquerel discovered radioactivity when a photogenic plate was darkened by a mineral containing uranium
