The Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind opens. This is the first time the deaf and the blind are integrated.

A phone for the deaf is invented, using a teletypewriter (TTY). Making it an easy way for deaf people to call each other and to communicate.

The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 includes a section requiring federally funded organizations to provide TTY phones and interpreters for the Deaf.

French Sign Language Established

Stokoe publishes his findings about sign language as a legitimate language. In 1965 a Dictionary of ASL on Linguistic Principles is published.

It is also around this time that a cochlear implant is created made up of bio compatible materials, and it is implanted in four patients and they report hearing results.

A French priest, Charles Michel De L'Eppe created the first public school for the deaf.

At the same time, Spain, Germany, France, Holland and England, oral professors began to make great strides with sign language.

Geronimo Cardano of Padua, Italy, attempts to teach Deaf people to communicate using a code made up of symbols.

Discriminatory practices and obstacles to accessibility for the handicapped are both outlawed. The law has a huge impact on the wheel chair dependent, and also requires greater communications, education, and employment opportunities for the Deaf.
