Pingxi is a small village located about 20km from Taipei. It is found in a beautiful valley between two mountain ridges. It is a mountainous region with many beautiful views and natural wonders.

The Pingxi Sky lantern festival is something that everyone can enjoy. Its been going on for 13 years and attracts over 100,000 people every year. There's activites everyday for all ages, live music, parades and the last day of the festival is when the lanterns are released into the heavens.
The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival marks the Chinese new lunar year. The festival takes place mid-january to mid-february depending on the lunar calender, this year it falls on February 14th to February 23rd. Originally there was so much crime that they would send up their lanterns to let others know they were safe, which evolved into a large-scale lantern festival when the area’s coal mines closed in the late twentieth century and the villagers needed a new source of income. It is believed the wishes are sent to heaven and bring luck in the New Year.
There is a variety of hotels to choose from, from 5 stars to 1 star, depending on your budget. They are all about 50 minutes from Pingxi. Since Pingxi is so small there are no hotels in the village.

cost NT$100-NT$200 (US$3.25-US$6.50), people can pick the lantern color and write their wishes on the lantern. Sparklers are an option add-on.
Getting to Pingxi
The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival is location in slightly different areas of Pingxi each night. As traffic control will be in effect each night from 9:00 – 24:00 (i.e. no cars allowed into the festival area) it is highly recommend to use public transport.
Take the MRT Wenhu Line to Taipei Zoo and then transfer to shuttle buses departing from in front of the zoo (the last return MRT from Taipei Zoo departs at 24:00 during the festival).

1. Take Taipei Bus No. 795 from Taipei Zoo to Pingxi
2. Take Keelung Bus No. 846 from Ruifang – Shifen – Pingxi
