British Acts of Imperialism

1893

In 1893, Gandhi gets kicked off a train because he is colored and is sitting in first class on the train. This shows severe racism towards Gandhi and the Indians in general. It also represents that the Indians or colored people aren't treated as equal, and the British are treated superior to the Indians.

1906

The British made a law where every Indian is required to carry around an ID card. Whenever the Indians or Gandhi try to burn the ID cards, the officers would beat that person up or arrest them. This shows major separation between the British and Indians. The Indians aren't treated as equal because they have to always carry around their ID cards, whereas the British don't. And if the Indians are caught without their ID card with them, then they can be sentenced to jail.

1913

in 1913, Gandhi led a group of Indians from the Natal mining area into the Transvaal. But because the Indians did not have a permit to cross the Transvaal, the British became mad. Whenever they tried to cross into the Transvaal, the British would hit the Indinas. Along with Gandhi, many more Indians were put into prison. The British tried to get the Indians to get back to work by beating them, but whatever the British did, the Indians refused to go back to work. This shows oppression toward the Indians.

1919

In 1919 the Amritsar Massacre occurred. The Indians were non-violently protesting towards the British and giving speeches when all of the sudden, the British came in to the enclosed area and open fired. 379 people were killed and an estimated 1,200 were injured. This also shows oppression through the violent acts the British committed.

1922

In 1922 Gandhi was arrested and sentenced to six years in prison. He was arrested because the British claimed he was creating boycott and civil disobedience in India against the British. This shows injustice because Gandhi was trying everything he could to be non-violent and he wasn't really doing anything wrong, but the British tried to make up any reason to arrest Gandhi.

Indian Acts of Protest

1906

In 1906 the British made a law that all Indians must carry around an ID card and if they were caught without it, they would be under arrest. In the movie, Gandhi and other Indians went on a peaceful protest and threw their ID cards into a fire. The British got mad and hit them and also arrested them. One Indian got purposefully arrested to try and make a point to the government.

1910

In 1910, Gandhi decided to go on the non-violent path to free India. He held a meeting and informed all the Indians that they will not shoot or hurt any of the British soldiers. And if the British were to harm any of the Indians, the Indians would stay courageous and die to try and make a point. He informs the Indians that they should give up their own lives in order to make Indians equal to British and have no laws focused towards Indians.

1922

In 1922, Gandhi holds a meeting about British goods. Because of British textile companies, Indian women no longer have a job because everyone is buying British manufactured goods instead of the hand-woven clothes that Indian women make. This makes the Indians very mad and they decide to protest against British cloth by throwing British-made clothes into a fire.

1924

In 1924, Gandhi decides to pray and fast for 21 days. He fasted for self-purification and for a non-violent protest against the British. Instead of going on strike or hurting the British, Gandhi continuous with his non-violent protest by fasting. Gandhi also did this to help break the tension of Muslims and Hindus. This helped bring the peace between the two religions and bring the leaders together in order to be strong enough to protest against the British.

1930

In 1930 Gandhi led the Salt March. He led this march because the British put tax on salt. Gandhi and many Indians march to the Arabian Sea to make salt for themselves. This is against the law because they did not have a licenses to make the salt. This is a very important time in Gandhi's life. Gandhi stated he wasn't going to stop until the British would change the law.
