John Venn was an English Mathematician, noted for creating the Venn diagram. He was born on 4 August 1834 in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire to Martha Sykes and Rev. Henry Venn.

He came from a long line of evangelical christians and was brought up in a very strict atmosphere. He went to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. In 1857, he got his degree in mathematics. In 1903 he was elected President of the College, which he remained until his death.
