Hale tries to get the accused people in jail to confess so that they won't be hung. Danforth and Parris even let Elizabeth talk to John Proctor, thinking it will get one of them to confess. Then Parris tells them that his niece, Abigail stole from him and disappeared. He thinks she has escaped because of the rebellion in Andover.
Abigail has left Salem with all of Parris's money and all the people she has accused are in jail, about to be hanged including John Proctor and Rebecca Nurse. Because of the huge amount of convicted citizens in Salem, cows are roaming the street and crops are dying. Salem resembles a ghost town rather than a witch town.
Parris and Hale insist that the hangings be postponed since Elizabeth is pregnant and if they are not postponed, they will urge people to rebel. Hale continues to urge Elizabeth convince Proctor to confess. Elizabeth agrees to talk to him. Proctor says he is not a good man, and if he goes to the hanging without confessing, he is saying he is a good man. He wants Elizabeth's forgiveness. Proctor decides to confess. He will confess verbally but not sign. Danforth won't accept his confession unless Proctor signs. Proctor won't and Danforth doesn't accept. Proctor eventually signs it.
Parris then starts to stand up for the people that are being hung, saying that they are good people and they should postpone the hangings. Danforth denies the request but says he will work till dawn to try to save them. But, Parris says that they are in danger, as he is receiving threats because Danforth keep hanging people.

The theme of act four would be reputation and integrity, because john shows that he struggles with his reputation when he rips up the signed confession because he didn't want his name on the churches door.He also did not want ruin his family name.
Simile
Proctor says, "I cannot mount the gibbet like a saint. It is a fraud. I am not that man"(Miller 143).
metaphor
Proctor says, "Nothing's spoiled by giving them this lie that were not rotten long before"(Miller 143).
Danforth uses pathos to persuade John Proctor to confess that he is working for the Devil. "Courage, man, courage-- let her witness her good example that she may come to God herself. Now hear it, Goody Nurse! Say on, Mr. Proctor. Did you bind yourself to the Devil's service?"(Miller 146). Danforth tells Proctor that it would be courageous of him to confess and it would justify the entirety of the witch trials.
The tone of act four is unhappiness. In the final act people are now facing death because of being accused in the witch trials. Such as a women being left as a widow with three children and john sacrificing his life.
