Introduce the opposing argument by stating the main point or points

Good ways to start:

  • But _____ is not completely inaccurate.
  • It is often argued that...
  • It is true that..
  • Opposing views claim..

Link back to the thesis by summarising why the counter argument is not a good enough solution

Good ways to start:

  • Therefore,
  • As a result,
  • Sometime writers might just want to restate his/her position simply.

Explain/Elaborate

Counter Argument - give compelling examples or evidence to refute

  • Acknowledge parts of the opposition that are valid but weak compared to the author's points.
  • It is important that you DO NOT say you agree with the opposing point of view, otherwise it may lead to a contradiction. Be neutral.

For example: DO NOT SAY

I would agree sometimes with the people who argue that it is better to abolish wearing the school uniform because it stifles the creativity of students.

Instead you can say

Some people argue that wearing school uniform stifles the students' creativity. This rationale is flawed because creativity can be expressed in many different ways and the type of clothes people wear really have no significant impact on their ability to be creative.

  • Certainly,
  • Of course,
  • One cannot deny that....
  • At the same time.....

Provide evidence /examples why the opposition's claims are incorrect or inconsequential or not a real problem.

Good ways to start:

  • Nevertheless,
  • However,
  • On the other hand,
