Stuarts and the Puritans

Stuarts

  • Reign began after Elizabeth Died in 1603 ("Stuarts and Puritans").
  • King James VI (A Protestant) was named as Elizabeth's successor (1603-1625). The time of his power was referred to as the Jacobean Era which was much like the Elizabethan Period ("Stuarts and Puritans").
  • Sponsored the coloinization of Jamestown, VA ("Stuarts and Puritans").
  • King James persecuted Purtains which led to migration and created the Plymouth Colony ("Stuarts and Puritans").

Puritans

  • Purtains, unwilling to renounce all bonds of fellowship with the Church of England, adopted a middle position which has been called nonseparatist congregationalism (Hudson).
  • Many of the clergy were able to retain a measure of freedom in their parishes (Hudson).
  • Migrated to America and established the Plymouth Rock Colony in 1620 due to King James religious intolerance ("Stuarts and Puritans").
