Martin Luther King Jr.

Motivation

  • King Jr. was motivated by the discrimination he faced all his life. He used the inspiration of his faith and Ghandi's teachings to start a peaceful civil rights movement in the 1950s and 60s (The King Center).

Timeline

  • Born on January 15th, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Time Line of His Life).
  • He grew up in a very religious home because both his father and grandfather were reverends (The King Center).
  • King attended segregated public schools and at the age of 15 was admitted to Morehouse College and after graduating in 1948 he entered Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania.
  • King then enrolled at Boston University and later met his wife Coretta Scott.
  • December 1st, 1955- After Rosa Parks was arrested, King Jr. became the leader of the Montgomery bus boycott. A year later, the supreme court ruled that bus segregation was illegal.
  • 1958- Martin Luther King Jr. was stabbed in Harlem, NY while on a book tour. He was stabbed by Izola Ware Curry with a letter opener.
  • 1960- King Jr. was arrested during a protest and sentenced to four months in jail. He was released from jail after John and Robert Kennedy came to his aid.
  • August 28th, 1963- King Jr. led the March on Washington and gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Almost 250,000 people listened to his speech in the capitol.
  • April 4th, 1968- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated by James Earl Ray (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Time Line of His Life).
  • The couple wed in 1953 and settled in Montgomery, Alabama, where King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Time Line of His Life).
