The Book Thief Themes: Courage

  • Throughout the book, there is a lot of courage shown by many characters
  • Rudy showed lots of courage when he repilied with a false date on purpose, when he was asked the Führer's birthday, even though he knew he would be beaten.
  • The Hubermann's showed courage when they took in Max, even though they knew they could be persecuted for harboring a Jew
  • Liesel showed courage when she decided to help Max when he was moving to the concentration camp truck even though she knew the soldiers were watching

  • In the Book Thief, anyone with a Jewish identity is persecuted in Germany.
  • They are starved, physical abused, and live in the worst living conditions.
  • This creates a change in the identities of some ofthe characters in the novel. A wrong move can result in instant death for loved ones, not to mention one's self.
  • Some of the novels main characters refuse to be identified as Nazis and forge new identities from friendship, and resistance to injustice.

  • A lot of the words used in the Book Thief have affected many of the characters in the book thief
  • Learning the alphabet and how to create words is how Liesel and Hans Hubermann begin to develop their deep bond.
  • Liesel uses the words of the book she had with her, to calm the people in the raid shelter during the air raids.
  • Liesel's book that she wrote, The Book Thief, helped established a emotional connection to Death in the story.

  • The Book Thief is set in the time of Nazi Germany
  • It is also during the time of the Holocaust
  • Jews are being taken out of their homes, and sent to concentration camps
  • It showed how a lot of the non-jewish people of Germany hated the Jews that lived there.
  • Max, one of the characters, hides inside the Hubermann's basement to be protected from death

  • The Book Thief is steeped in war. It's set primarily between 1939 and 1943 in Nazi Germany.
  • Both the Holocaust and World War II are going on at this time. Warfare shapes the characters' lives and impact their choices.
  • The narrator, who is death, does not like wars as it stops him from taking a vacation and he never has a slow day.
  • Hans Hubermann tells Liesel that he had previously been in World War I.
  • Hans Hubermann and his son are enrolled into the German army for WWII
