The Sphere Project

HUMANITY

This is also known as the "Humanitarian imperative" the belief that all possible steps should be taken to prevent or alleviate human suffering arising out of conflict or calamity, and that civilians so affected have a right to protection and assistance.

IMPARTIALITY

Aid is given regardless of the race, creed or nationality of the recipients and without adverse distinction of any kind. Aid priorities are calculated on the basis of need alone.

NEUTRALITY

Humanitarian actors must not take side in hostilities or engage in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature.

INDEPENDANCE

Humanitarian aid must be "autonomous" from the political, economic, military entities or other objectives that any actors may holds with regard to areas where humanitarian action is being implemented.
