food of the poor

daily life of poor people in elizabethan england

During this time the population of England rose dramatically. The country normally relied on crops and harvest but they were hit by bad weather so the farmers and workers moved from the hills into the towns and cities. These people were no longer employed so they seeked work in the cities, this is how so many poor people came about. The government made laws to help the poor. They even invented their own form of language called "canting". The idea behind it was protection, so nobody would understand what they were saying to eachother.

poor people in the elizabethan era had an unvaried diet. They ate mostly bread, fish, cheese, and beer. Vegetables and fresh fruits were also eaten by the poor. Anything that grew from the ground was considered peasants food.

Not all the poor people stole stuff. The rogues and vagabonds stole things to eat but were punished severely if they were caught. The able-bodied poor would work when and if work was available to make a few cents for food. The helpless poor could not work. They foraged for food when they could or they starved. Sometimes they would have able-bodied poor to get food for them. Life for the poor was very hard in these times.
