Rwanda is a tropical Switzerland in the heart of Africa. It is about a third the size of Belgium and sits bewteen Tanzania and Congo.
Rwanda'spopulation was mostly made up of traditional crop growers known as Hutu's. For centuries Hutu's would attract Tutsi's (traditional herdsmen) from northern Africa. For 600 years the Hutu's and the Tutsi's had traded and shared ideas in farming in order to survive. They also share their culture, their language and nationalities with each other. Tutsi's would act as land owners and Hutu's would act as farmers creating a balanced population since there were alot more Hutu's than Tutsi's
A conflict had begun between the Hutu's and Tutsi's when European colonists had arrived in Rwanda. Since Tutsi's where the land owners, the colonists chose these people to become privileged and educated "intermediares". Feeling more powerful, the Tutsi's started acting more like aristocrats making the Hutu's feeling like peasants egnighting the fire of yet another genocide
The Hutu started genocidal actions when their President died in1994. The Hutu started to kill Tutsi and others thought to be Tutsi.
There were many reasons why the Hutu started to kill Tutsi. The Hutu blamed the Tutsi for tension in all areas. This included political, ethnic, and economic tension. The Hutu also wanted revenge for the Tutsi oppression of the Hutu people.
Over the course of three weeks, the murder count had gone up to 800,000. There were deaths from both sides. though many Tutsi were killed in camps, some Tutsi went to have revenge and killed Hutu civilians and soldiers.
The Rwanda Genocide ended on July 1994. The UN troops marched into Kigali. They captured that it and the Hutus and Tutsis fled the country. People started to take action after the Red Cross had an estimated over 500,000 people were killed.
