When it happened

On April 17th Cyclone Monica was officially declared a cyclone on the Coral Reef. As it moved on April 19th westward crossing Queensland coast south of Lockhart river it was categorized as a category 3. The next day, April 23rd, it left Cape York as a tropical cyclone and got to a category 5 when it neared Nhulunbuy. It remained offshore the next day, and crossed the coast again on April 25th . It weakened to a category one by the time it hit Jabiro, and was below cyclone intensity when it got to Darwin.

It was an issue for such an urban population to prepare for the sever cyclone. However, they were give at least a 12 hour warning on the forecast TC track,and most people prepared.

Damage Costs and Fatalities

On April 16th, in the far northern Coral Sea, a tropical low storm was analyzed. It was the strongest storm of the 2005-2006 Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone season and one of the strongest recorded tropical storms for the area. It reached cyclone intensity on April 17th and started to move Cape York Pennsylvania. It intensified to hurricane force strength before making it to landfall on the afternoon of April 19th. It weakened early the following day before entering the Gulf of Carpentaria as a week cyclone.

The damage costs was $5.1 million, and no deaths reported.

There were no injuries recorded during the storm, but a lot of environmental destruction took place.

What Could have been done to make the event less severe and who was there to help?

An earlier warning would have made the event less severe, but other than that nothing else would have helped.

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission(TRMM) was the satellite which was observing the storm.

Many people came to help with the damages: Member for Leichhardt, the Hon Warren Entsch MP, the Minister for Transport and Regional Services, the Hon Warren Truss MP
