Natural Science and Values

\

He is ready to accept some sort of religion

The quote doesn't show regret that he spent his life pursuing science but now implies that he is now "ready" to accept some sort of religion, which he previously rejected

D.H

Science caused him to take unethical steps which he highly regrets

Findings of Science is a natural phenomenon

  • Natural occurring science will not have any effect on social context of science. Plants and animals and their daily lives.
  • Researches such as those of the Atomic bomb will have greater effect on on social aspects of science. Human beings are greatly affected by the impacts of Atomic bombs.

Cultural influence can affect methods of finding science

He believes that scientific research has led to unethical steps that he may regret doing. Like every individual he is trying to connect to the supernatural to feel good in his conscience.

Some religions don't allow for certain procedures because of their beliefs

  • blood transfusions
  • autopsies

Science VS. Religion

  • The distinction between Science and Religion
  • Is it possible to accept both?

How does the social context of scientific work affect the methods and findings of science?

What could be meant by 'I have been steeped in science all my life, now I am ready to pray'? (Stephen Hawking)

Sometimes, you have to leave it up to faith.

There are some ideas that science can neither prove nor disprove, therefore you might have to leave it up to faith.

Location and Time Influence Science

  • Social Past define what we see as important.
  • We ask questions based on what is important to us
  • Social Context determine what resources are available to conduct scientific research
  • Ancient civilizations

  • We use science to better understand the world around us.
  • It should not be subject to public scrutiny.
  • Science is inherently worthwhile.
  • Science is always subject to change.

Social Problems does influence Scientific Discovery.

Often times, science is used to alleviate the problems that plague us now. (i.e. diseases)

  • AIDS Epidemic
  • Ebola outbreak
  • Cancer

Assumptions about science

What values and assumptions about knowledge underpin science? What findings might emerge from a consideration, for example, of whether or not it is intrinsically worthwhile, and whether or not it will continue or be valid in the future?

knowledge rests on various

assumptions that you do not know but justifiably take for granted

Most scientific research are worthwhile, however not all.

  • The Nazi experiments performed on the Jews were not necessary.
  • Tuskegee experiment was needed but was highly unethical.
  • On the other hand, Cancer research is important but not risking the lives of human beings.

Science is worthwhile

  • Science helps us find out things about our environment, body and new things are constantly being discovered
  • Its human nature to have questions and science can answer many of them

Science will continue to be valid

Despite changes in science and theories that have proven false science is still valid and always will be.
