The Odyssey: Book 4

Main Characters:

Menelaus

Helen

Telemakhos

Odysseus

Athena

Penelops

Calypso

Setting:

Book 4 takes place in Lacedaemon where Menelaus and Helen live. Later, the setting zooms back to Ithica where the lusty suitors are to trying to get at Penelope. Telemakhos goes to Lacedaemon to ask Menelaus if he has any information about his father. Meanwhile, suitors have intruded on Penelope wanting to marry her since her husband has been out of the picture. When Telemakhos returns, he becomes an amazing hero and kicks out all of the suitors out of his house. His mother is amazed!!

The plot:

Telemakhos goes to Lacedaemon to speak to

Menelaus because he heard that he had some

information about his father. Menelaus tells him

that while he was in Egypt, he detained a man

named Proteus who knew that Odysseus was on

an island with Calypso. Also in Egypt, Menelaus

found out that since he is the son-in-law of Zeus

he can't die, so that is the reason he didn't go to the

Elysian Field.

Main Shebang of this thing:

The main idea of Book 4 was to set Telekahoms into man mode,

and for him to discover where his father is. He wants to protect

his mother from the suitors and when he hears his father is alive,

it gives him an extra confident boost to go home and show Antinous

and all of his buddies that they can't treat his mom like that.

Athena gets involved, like always, and comforts Penelope when she

hears the news of the planned ambush against her son. Athena then has

a plan that will lead into the next book of the poem, that changes everything.
