Why Gatsby is most responsible

Jay Gatsby is overall most responsible for his death. This is because he firstly keeps his life details very secret, allowing people to make up their own stories and rumors about his life. Secondly, he falls for Daisy, whom he should not fall for in the first place, and takes it far enough to get Tom to hate him. Then whist on a drive with her, she hits Myrtle, Gatsby takes the blame for this, putting himself at risk, and thanks to Tom's hatred for Gatsby and his connections with Mr. Wilson, he tells Mr. Wilson it was Gatsby who killed his wife, resulting in Gatsby's death.

Tom's involvement in Gatsby's death was that he told Wilson that Gatsby was driving the car that hit Myrtle and in doing so led Mr. Wilson to set his sights on Gatsby. Tom even knew about the fact that Daisy was driving the car that hit Myrtle, but wanted revenge on Gatsby for taking Daisy from him. "What if I did tell him? That fellow had it coming to him" (Fitzgerald, 190) This quote supports that Tom did have a personal issue with Gatsby and told Wilson that Gatsby was the one responsible for Myrtle's death.

Gatsby's involvement in his death is that he allowed for the events leading up to it to happen. He allowed for the rumors to be told about him killing a man, he tried to seduce a woman who was already married, and he took the blame for her killing Myrtle. "Yes, but of course I'll say I was." (Fitzgerald 153) Gatsby admits to Nick he will take the blame for Myrtle's death. Gatsby also aggravated Tom by telling him Daisy never loved him. "She's never loved you, she loves me." (Fitzgerald 138)

Daisy's selfishness is her main reason for her involvement in Gatsby's death. She even tells Tom that she loves Gatsby instead, yet when she hits Myrtle with the car, she allows Gatsby to take the blame. Overall, leading to Gatsby's demise. "I did love him once - but I loved you too." (Fitzgerald 140). This quote supports that Daisy does in fact love Gatsby and no longer loves Tom, which provokes Tom to tell Wilson that Gatsby killed Myrtle.

Myrtle's involvement in Gatsby's death is that her death is the start of the events leading up to Gatsby's death. Her being hit by the car starts Mr. Wilson to search for the man who killed her. which leads Tom to tell Mr. Wilson that it was Gatsby in the car, which leads to Mr. Wilson killing Gatsby. Myrtle also was in a affair with Tom, giving Mr. Wilson the reason for suspicion. Myrtle also would not have been killed had she not seen Tom with Gatsby's car earlier on in the book. She believed Tom was driving and since her and Tom were cheating on their spouses with each other.
