An interview with 10 different Riverview High teachers was taken in order to view their perspective on respect in the adolescent community.

The teachers who participated were:

What is your definition of respect?

"To allow for the diversity of others without being judgmental."

"Accepting differences and beliefs."

This is the basis for which we are taught how to respect. By getting positive reinforcement when we show it and negative reinforcement when we show disrespect, we are able to easily learn which we should do and that which we should not. Our only necessity is for someone to install this reinforcement.

Our sense of respect was developed by watching how our parents showed it. Then later on we saw the way it was shown by our peers. By watching how multiple different people and influences in our society show respect (or the lack thereof) we developed our perspective on how and when we should use it.

Mas o que realmente faz com que a humanidade perceba o valor do respeito é quando ele é tirado.

Respeito e desrespeito demonstrado na Mídia

Estudos têm demonstrado que na televisão infantil, como Bob Esponja, Os Feiticeiros de Waverly Place, iCarly , e vários outros, que há, em média, 19 atos desrespeitosos por 22 minutos por episódio .

In this era television shows took an importance in showing respectful acts. Some even incorporated it into the message that they wanted the show as a whole to portray. An example of this is the show "Leave it to Beaver".

Os atos de respeito tornaram-se menos proeminentes. Eles não parecem tão importantes. Atos desrespeitosos são os que chamam a atenção porque aqueles que são aparentemente inocentes são vistos como engraçado.

Examples of a Lack of Respect

-Underage drinking : lack of respect for the law

-Serial Killers : lack of respect for the victim, the victim's family, and even a lack of respect for themselves

-Cell phones in class : lack of respect for the teacher

-Discrimination : lack of respect for the equality of all human beings

-Disobedience : lack of respect for a parent or someone of authority

-Interrupting : lack of respect for the person talking

Nossa sociedade parece ter permitido que o respeito se tornasse praticamente invisível.

Respeito se tornou "moda antiga" nos meios de comunicação.

-Ele é visto como chato e não intriga o público.

-A falta de respeito para a maior parte ainda é vista como sendo algo errado, no entanto, não há nenhum valor colocado em realmente ser respeitoso .
