Jonas decides to leave the community. He takes Gabe with him. They ride off of the edge of the community on Jonas' Bicycle. They get into desert, then into the snow. They struggle to go any farther. Jonas then thinks of the sled memory and regains strength. He finds a sled and rides it down the hill. They stop near a little house with lights and music and singing. while this is happening, he crossed the border, and the memories were given back to the community.
Pills and injections were given daily to get rid of the community's feelings, emotions, and individuality. They represent sameness, and a black and white world
The sled represents freedom, and being able to escape sameness. Jonas was able to escape the community and get to a house by riding on a sled.
The Giver was the old Receiver of Memory. He has blue eyes. His job is to hold onto all of the old memories of the community's past. Since he is the only citizen to remember any sort of memory, he helps guide the chief elder into making the right decisions regarding the safety and future of the community. He is the only citizen able to feel pain, emotion, see color, and disregard the rules of the community. He trains Jonas, the new receiver of memory, by giving him the memories.

He then tries to tell his friends and family about how life used to be lived. The chief elder sees him and gets mad. After no one wants change, Jonas decides he want to give them the memories, so they can have a normal life. Jonas then goes to the giver and tells him about his plan to leave the community and take Gabe with him. The Giver helps him by supplying him with food. He tells him that in order to give the memories back, he has to cross a border, that is in the elsewhere.
Jonas is worried about the upcoming Ceremony of Twelves, a very important milestone his life. Jonas seems to have a typical life. He is not sure what it means, and Asher did not notice anything.
