Aglossia

A rare birth defect where the tongue

is missing or underdeveloped.

Often other anomilies are also present e.g.

missing parts of hands and feet, small jaw and oral

webbing.

Causes

-Congenital conditions

-Head conditions

-Oral conditions

Symptoms

Missing tongue, feeding problems, breathing problems..

Tooth enamel defects, abnormally small tongue,

Speech problems, swallowing problems, missing teeth..

Treatment

Treatment is often primarily centered around orthodontics - the absence of the tongue can have a huge implication on the structure of the jaws as there is no tongue to provide pressure against the teeth which normally helps maintain good oral structure and function. Compliance with orthodontic treatment plans is essential to prevent complications such as collapse of the bite, especially if there are missing teeth.

Breathing assistance may be needed early in life if airway is compromised due to the absence of the tongue

Other treatment measures may also be required depending on the individual requirements

-Speech therapy might help certain individuals with aglossia.
