NOW YOU...
THE ECOLOGICAL MODEL OF HUMAN PERFORMANCE
PROBLEM?
person:
- individually focused, client centered framework
- person brings a unique set of variables
- "person variables": values, interests, past experiences, skills...
- person is continually surrounded by context
and influenced by it.
ALTER:
Focuses on context in which person performs. Intervention aimed at altering the actual context in which tasks occur
ADAPT/ MODIFY:
modifying the context for performance or the task features of a selected task.
ESTABLISH/
RESTORE:
Directing intervention effort at person variables and aims to improve person's skills.
(context is not ignored!)
Performance:
- performance occurs when a person acts to engage
in tasks within a context.
- "performance range"- number or types of activities
available to the person.
- Performance is determined by the interaction
between the "person's variables" and the "context
variables".
CREATE:
Creating circumstances that support optimal performance for all persons and populations
PREVENT:
Avoiding the development of performance problems.
Changing person, context or task variables in order to prevent negative outcomes
Task:
- An objective set of behaviors necessary to
accomplish a goal
- An infinite variety of tasks exists around
every person.
- Can be categorized at different levels and
organized in different ways.
- Constellation of tasks form a person's role
and occupation
Context:
- set of interrelated conditions that surround the person
- 2 primary types of context are defined:
temporal (Chronological age, developmental stage...)
environmental (physical, social, and cultural dimentions..)
- may be enabling or limiting to a person
I want to ride the
bus with the other
children
Alter:
Parents will bring
Anthony to school on
days when he has extra materials to carry
Adapt:
Anthony will wear
earplugs or his ipod with music on the bus ride;
Anthony will sit in
the front of the bus
Establish/Restore:
Provide sensory integration (SI) treatment to improve Anthony's ability to modulate sensory stimuli.
Create:
Not applicable
Prevent:
Anthony will meet the
bus driver on several occasions so that he
will be more familiar
with him.
Alter:
Do laundry at
laundromat
Adapt:
Provide table in laundry area so clothes may be placed there and not have to be on the floor- eliminates bending
Establish/ Restore:
Provide exercise program designed to increase right knee ROM and strength and to maintain/ increase back ROM.
Create:
Not applicable
Prevent:
