What inspired you to be a Jazz Artist?
I loved music as a child. and i felt that i was telling my whole story when i was playing Jazz.
What was your childhood like?
It was pretty hard. I was born into a poor family in New Orleans and i was the grandson of slaves. I went to Fisk School for boys and heard my first creole music. I also worked as a paper boy. I hung out in dance halls alot and learned some moves. i dropeed out of school at 11 and joined a boys quartet that sang for money. In this quartet i was taught to play the trumpet. I guess i had an okay childhood . i worked and learned for most of my young life.
Tell us about your family.
Well, i married my wonderful wife, Daisy, in 1918. I adopted my first child, clarence, when he was 3 years old.
When were you born?
I was born in 1901.
although i was not a slave, i was born in a time of severe racial hatred and my grandfather was a slave.
Is it true you attended reform school?
Yes, at the age of 12, on new year's i fired a gun in the air and was sent to reform school where i learned to play the cornet. i was released at 14.
