Ecological Significance

  • Major role at the base of the food chain
  • Cause red tide- Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB)

Harmful Algal Bloom

-When colonies of algae grow out of control

-Can be harmful: some species release toxins

  • kill fish; shellfish dangerous to eat; humans breathe in toxins

-Harmful effect on marine systems:

  • masses of algae die
  • decompose and deplete O2
  • fish either leave or die

The Fire Algae

ex: Dinoflagellates

  • Mostly unicellular flagellates
  • Eukaryotic
  • Chloroplasts, if present, are golden brown to yellowish green.
  • Motile cells with two flagella
  • Cell walls of cellulose
  • Valves (shells) made up of interlocking plates
  • Eyespot to seek out light
  • Feeding: Most are photosynthetic autotrophs
  • Some are saprophytes
  • Some are parasitic
  • Some are endosymbionts
  • Habitat: mostly warm oceans
  • can be found living in plankton, coral, sand
  • as parasites in marine life

BIOLUMINESCENCE!

  • Reproduction is mostly asexual but rarely sexual reproduction will occur
