This was a cartilage structure that resembled an ear. The structure was grown by seeding cow cartilage cells into a biodegradable mold that was then implanted under the skin of

the mouse. The cartilage had naturally grown by itself into the "ear" shape

Is this expirement beneficial or dangerous?

Although very beneficial, this mouse has no harmful side effects associated with it. There had been absolutely no genetic engineering, therefor leading to a safe experiment on the mouse. The mice that were used were known as a Nude Mouse since it had no immune system and couldn't refuse the cow cells. This project is in the process of further investigation to be able to use this "spare" ear as a use for humans. It can't actually be used on humans since our immune systems will indeed reject the cow cells.

This experiment is known to have many advantages behind it; some that aren't normally thought of. To begin, the ear mouse had indeed been a successful labratory experiment by Mr. Vacanti. The ear was very compatible with

the mouse. This extra cartilage has a beneficial factor not generally thought of; helping

recuperate skin to victims that had been burnt. This extra human ear was questioned by many. The spare ear can be used for surgical purposes. Since the human ear is so difficult to repair, Vacanti had initiated the thought of a extra human ear that isn't involved in genetic engineering since no human DNA was used.

What's the next step?

History

The ideal goal of this project is to fulfill the research to end up with the ability to use this "spare" ear on humans. Already one step ahead, Vacanti had already used his knowledge to help 12 year-old Sean G. McCormack grow a chest-plate. McCormack was born with Poland's Syndrome and was without bone or cartilage on his left chest. Now he can continue to play his favourite sport, baseball, thanks to the help of Vacanti.

In 1997, a bizarre photograph was published along with the results of a hairless mouse with a human ear completely covering its back. The Vacanti mouse is known as the labratory experiment of the ear mouse. The Vacanti mouse was created by Charles Vacanti and his colleagues in the department of Anesthesiology at the University of Massachusetts, the medical school.

Personally, this GMO is a very helpful project. If further research does lead to the ability to use this spare ear on humans, then that is very approved of and a very succesful experiment. This GMO does not actually have a negative effect on the mice so therefor i do not disagree with the production of this new cartilage.
