  • 00:01 - 00:04

asked heartbeat, shortness of breath, sweaty hands,

  • 00:05 - 00:07

Those are physical responses to stress and

  • 00:07 - 00:10

anxiety and something you may experience right

  • 00:10 - 00:12

before stepping onto a stage or turning

  • 00:12 - 00:14

on your camera before you give a presentation

  • 00:15 - 00:16

    at some point.

  • 00:16 - 00:17

    Everyone has experienced nerves,

  • 00:17 - 00:20

getting the best of them right before speaking in front of an audience,

  • 00:20 - 00:23

you might feel overwhelmed by the crowd or

  • 00:23 - 00:26

simply nervous about accidentally saying the wrong thing,

  • 00:26 - 00:30

whatever it maybe you shouldn't have to compromise your presentation,

  • 00:30 - 00:34

especially if it's for a job promotion, business deal or an academic course.

  • 00:35 - 00:38

It's important to understand your stress and learn how to calm

  • 00:38 - 00:42

your nerves before a presentation to feel and appear more confident.

  • 00:42 - 00:46

That's why today I'm going to be sharing four highly effective ways.

  • 00:46 - 00:49

You can reduce stress before your presentation.

  • 00:49 - 00:52

It's best to follow all four tips to really feel

  • 00:52 - 00:54

the difference before and during your time in the spotlight.

  • 00:55 - 00:57

I'll kick us off with a tip that you can practice

  • 00:57 - 01:01

months to weeks before a presentation and end with a tip,

  • 01:01 - 01:05

that's most important, hours, two minutes before you start, before we jump in.

  • 01:05 - 01:07

I want to remind you to subscribe to the present channel.

  • 01:07 - 01:11

If you're interested in more presentation tips and tricks and if you'd

  • 01:11 - 01:14

like to learn how present can help you improve your presentations.

  • 01:14 - 01:17

So now let's get started with step number one,

  • 01:17 - 01:18

    understanding your stress.

  • 01:19 - 01:23

The first step to overcoming any fear or anxiety is understanding where

  • 01:23 - 01:26

it comes from or getting to the root of the problem.

  • 01:27 - 01:30

If you experience a lot of stress right before public speaking.

  • 01:30 - 01:33

Don't just brush it off as natural or normal.

  • 01:33 - 01:38

It's common for stress to mask a greater issue or fear you might be facing

  • 01:38 - 01:40

to get to the root of the problem?

  • 01:40 - 01:44

Ask yourself what is the worst case scenario for you? Are you afraid?

  • 01:44 - 01:47

You'll forget what to say and feel embarrassed or maybe

  • 01:47 - 01:50

you're afraid people won't listen to you and you'll experience rejection

  • 01:51 - 01:52

    and then ask yourself,

  • 01:52 - 01:55

why are you dreading these emotions so much when you're

  • 01:55 - 01:58

doing a deep dive into your feelings about public speaking,

  • 01:58 - 02:01

ask yourself, what are you really stressed about

  • 02:02 - 02:05

by understanding the real reasons behind your stress?

  • 02:05 - 02:08

You'll be able to rationalize it afterwards.

  • 02:08 - 02:10

You'll have a much better chance of overcoming the issue,

  • 02:10 - 02:15

whatever it may be because you recognized it also don't be afraid to ask for help

  • 02:15 - 02:17

or guidance from others who have a similar

  • 02:17 - 02:20

issue and then try to practically deal with it

  • 02:21 - 02:24

now that you've come face to face with the real reason

  • 02:24 - 02:27

why you get nervous before a presentation and you know,

  • 02:27 - 02:28

or learning how to deal with it.

  • 02:28 - 02:30

It's time to make sure you feel prepared.

  • 02:31 - 02:34

Being underprepared is one of the most obvious reasons why you

  • 02:34 - 02:39

feel nervous before presenting confidence comes from assurance in this case.

  • 02:39 - 02:42

That's being sure that you know exactly what you have

  • 02:42 - 02:44

to say and how you're going to say it.

  • 02:44 - 02:46

There's a fascinating example of confidence that

  • 02:46 - 02:48

will make you believe in yourself even more

  • 02:49 - 02:51

so, here's a guy hanging off a cliff,

  • 02:51 - 02:52

    that's Alex Honnold,

  • 02:52 - 02:55

you may notice that there is no safety gear on

  • 02:55 - 02:59

him and that's because he's a free solo climber,

  • 02:59 - 03:02

meaning that he practices climbing without any ropes or other type

  • 03:02 - 03:04

of gear that would protect him if he slips out.

  • 03:05 - 03:06

    So in this practice

  • 03:06 - 03:09

there's no room for imperfection or mistakes.

  • 03:10 - 03:15

He climbed a 3000 ft rock formation without any safety year in july 2017,

  • 03:15 - 03:16

    how

  • 03:16 - 03:20

he practiced climbing the El capitan rock up 50 times

  • 03:20 - 03:23

with safety year before he free solo the rock formation

  • 03:24 - 03:27

after reaching the top of the mountain. He confidently state in an interview

  • 03:27 - 03:32

that there was no uncertainty in this climb because he knew exactly what to do

  • 03:32 - 03:32

    the whole way,

  • 03:33 - 03:37

An exceptionally high level of preparation gave him the confidence

  • 03:37 - 03:40

to attempt the free solo climb and ultimately complete it.

  • 03:42 - 03:46

Even though this may seem like an extreme example, it's true in its essence,

  • 03:46 - 03:49

    practice makes perfect.

  • 03:49 - 03:52

If you practice your presentation speech long enough that you're able to

  • 03:52 - 03:54

recite it when woke it up in the middle of the night,

  • 03:54 - 03:57

you'll feel 10 times more confident when presenting because

  • 03:57 - 03:59

you'll know exactly what to say the whole way.

  • 04:00 - 04:02

A great way to practice is by presenting

  • 04:02 - 04:05

your presentation to your friends and family,

  • 04:05 - 04:08

because there you'll also be able to collect some helpful feedback

  • 04:08 - 04:11

and if you don't think of the time and energy to

  • 04:11 - 04:14

practice your presentation speech as much as you like or you

  • 04:14 - 04:17

simply want to have that safety here with you when presenting,

  • 04:17 - 04:19

try out present your notes and present,

  • 04:19 - 04:21

you can easily add them to each side.

  • 04:21 - 04:24

As you can see in the example here when presenting,

  • 04:24 - 04:27

you're the only one that sees them which helps

  • 04:27 - 04:30

you deliver an impressive presentation with maximum confidence.

  • 04:31 - 04:34

What also goes into preparation is the organization

  • 04:34 - 04:37

of your presentation speech and the materials.

  • 04:37 - 04:40

So to have an easier time memorizing your talking points,

  • 04:40 - 04:45

plan out your presentation, you can do that by creating a mind map for yourself.

  • 04:45 - 04:48

A mind map will help you organize your thoughts and ensure that

  • 04:48 - 04:52

you memorize all the main focus areas to create a mind map.

  • 04:52 - 04:54

    Use present design,

  • 04:54 - 04:58

simply select a template to create a mind map like that in the example right over here

  • 05:00 - 05:02

next up you want to set up your space

  • 05:03 - 05:05

and that means exactly where you're going to present.

  • 05:05 - 05:07

    So if you're presenting offline,

  • 05:07 - 05:10

try out the stage and make sure you familiarize yourself with the environment.

  • 05:11 - 05:13

    If you're presenting online,

  • 05:13 - 05:16

set up your background and check whether the lighting is right,

  • 05:16 - 05:20

adapting and familiarizing yourself your space will make you feel more prepared

  • 05:20 - 05:25

and confident during your presentation and last but definitely not least due.

  • 05:25 - 05:28

A technical check in if you're using videos, audios,

  • 05:28 - 05:32

visual aids or props in your presentation double or triple

  • 05:32 - 05:34

check if everything works as you'd expect it to.

  • 05:34 - 05:37

You don't want to worry about poor quality for your

  • 05:37 - 05:40

audio or video material in the middle of your presentation.

  • 05:43 - 05:46

So if you feel like you've done everything you can

  • 05:46 - 05:49

you've practiced your presentation how to present your notes and

  • 05:49 - 05:52

double check the quality of your visual aids but you're

  • 05:52 - 05:55

still feeling a little nervous right before your presentation.

  • 05:55 - 05:57

What you need is a practice that grounds

  • 05:57 - 06:00

your thoughts and calms your nerves enter breathing.

  • 06:01 - 06:05

You may ask how can a breathing exercise really helped calm me down?

  • 06:05 - 06:08

We breathe all the time and still feel stressed.

  • 06:08 - 06:09

    Actually,

  • 06:09 - 06:12

breathing exercises are much more than lengthy inhales

  • 06:12 - 06:15

and exhales there about shifting your attention on

  • 06:15 - 06:17

your body and allowing unnecessary thoughts to fade

  • 06:17 - 06:19

away as you focus on your breath.

  • 06:19 - 06:24

Deep breathing has so many benefits. It signals your nervous system to calm down.

  • 06:24 - 06:27

It's proven to lower blood pressure and heart rate

  • 06:27 - 06:30

and it can even improve your immune system.

  • 06:31 - 06:33

So now let's go into an exercise.

  • 06:33 - 06:37

So by doing your breathing exercise you can calm your nerves almost right away.

  • 06:37 - 06:42

So here's an easy exercise. You can try 15 minutes before your next presentation.

  • 06:42 - 06:44

    It's called box breathing.

  • 06:44 - 06:46

So what you want to do is inhale through

  • 06:46 - 06:48

your nose while counting the four in your head.

  • 06:48 - 06:52

Then hold your breath for another four and then exhale while

  • 06:52 - 06:56

counting until four and then you're going to repeat the cycle.

  • 06:56 - 06:59

So after you've gone through a few cycles you'll feel your

  • 06:59 - 07:02

heartbeat slowing down in your nerves calming down as well.

  • 07:02 - 07:05

And if you're interested in exploring other breathing exercises,

  • 07:05 - 07:08

check out the link that I've attached in the description box below

  • 07:08 - 07:10

you also are welcome to try out this exercise right now,

  • 07:10 - 07:12

so feel free to pause the video to do.

  • 07:12 - 07:13

    So

  • 07:15 - 07:17

    next up focus

  • 07:18 - 07:20

now that you're hopefully all relaxed,

  • 07:20 - 07:23

you want to ensure that your nerves don't catch up

  • 07:23 - 07:25

with you once you're on stage or in the meeting

  • 07:25 - 07:29

stress usually comes from over thinking.

  • 07:29 - 07:32

That's why it's essential to eliminate unnecessary

  • 07:32 - 07:34

thoughts that distract you from your presentation.

  • 07:34 - 07:37

It's easy to get stuck in a loop when

  • 07:37 - 07:39

you're thinking about what others are thinking about you.

  • 07:39 - 07:42

    Instead focus on your presentation,

  • 07:42 - 07:46

get excited about your topic and the insights you want to share with others.

  • 07:46 - 07:48

If you focus on things that you can control,

  • 07:48 - 07:51

like the quality of your presentation or your performance,

  • 07:51 - 07:54

then you'll feel more confident and in control when you present.

  • 07:56 - 07:58

But what do you do if something doesn't go as planned?

  • 07:58 - 08:02

What if you mess up, just remember, it's fine,

  • 08:02 - 08:05

you have to trust yourself and build your

  • 08:05 - 08:07

confidence so that whenever situations thrown at you,

  • 08:07 - 08:09

you'll be able to handle it with these.

  • 08:09 - 08:14

Also take any failure as an opportunity to learn with this mindset,

  • 08:14 - 08:17

you won't beat yourself up too much about mistakes,

  • 08:17 - 08:21

you'll see everything as a practice to get better at what you're doing after all,

  • 08:21 - 08:23

it's up to you to become the better presenter

  • 08:26 - 08:29

Alright now that we've covered all four tips that will
