Hi guys, I am Miss Walters.
- 00:02 - 00:06
I am the drama teacher at FCS and I want
- 00:06 - 00:08
to talk to you about middle school drama.
- 00:08 - 00:09
Welcome to a period.
- 00:10 - 00:11
Um So let's get started.
- 00:12 - 00:14
Um We're going to talk about what we do in
- 00:14 - 00:17
class, who I am about, your syllabus, all that stuff.
- 00:17 - 00:20
So starting with me, my name is Miss Walters.
- 00:20 - 00:23
I'm going to give you more information in a little
- 00:23 - 00:26
bit in that little level and um let's talk about
- 00:26 - 00:26
the class.
- 00:27 - 00:31
So middle school drama is a lot of different things.
- 00:32 - 00:34
Um mainly it's about storytelling.
- 00:35 - 00:36
So if you like books and you're like movies and
- 00:36 - 00:40
you're like selling, selling tours, telling stories and you like
- 00:40 - 00:42
reading stories are playing them on video games.
- 00:42 - 00:45
I'll talk about my experience with video games safely control
- 00:45 - 00:45
right there.
- 00:45 - 00:52
Um But um that's really the bear meat of what
- 00:52 - 00:52
we do.
- 00:52 - 00:53
Yeah, that's a lot of fun.
- 00:53 - 00:55
A lot of games, but it's also a lot of
- 00:55 - 00:58
work and we're gonna get into that about how we
- 00:58 - 00:59
need to make sure that we are working.
- 01:00 - 01:02
It's not just playing even though it feels like it
- 01:02 - 01:06
sometimes. So um your first assignment tonight is going to
- 01:06 - 01:08
be a google form that you fill out.
- 01:08 - 01:10
That just gives me a little bit more information about
- 01:10 - 01:14
you. Um I'll email it to you and you fill
- 01:14 - 01:15
it out, but since I am going to ask you
- 01:15 - 01:17
questions about yourself, I figured I might as well tell
- 01:17 - 01:18
you about me.
- 01:18 - 01:20
So we're gonna start with me.
- 01:21 - 01:24
So uh it's funny because when I present this for
- 01:24 - 01:25
the other classes.
- 01:25 - 01:27
I don't have this.
- 01:27 - 01:32
So it's normally just on a normal PowerPoint screen so
- 01:34 - 01:35
I get the bubble in front of my face.
- 01:36 - 01:36
It's funny.
- 01:36 - 01:38
Okay, so anyways, I'll just get over here.
- 01:39 - 01:39
That works.
- 01:39 - 01:41
You're figuring this out with me, we're figuring it out
- 01:41 - 01:44
together. So first off, my name is Britney Walters, but
- 01:45 - 01:45
you can call me Britney.
- 01:46 - 01:48
Um let me tell you a little bit about me.
- 01:48 - 01:52
So, I am a graduate of Stafford High School.
- 01:52 - 01:55
I am going to show you a picture of me.
- 01:55 - 01:56
That is very awkward picture to me.
- 01:57 - 01:59
I was not much older than you are when I
- 01:59 - 02:02
took that picture and that faces telling you I don't
- 02:02 - 02:03
want to be here and I don't want my picture
- 02:03 - 02:05
taken. Fair enough.
- 02:05 - 02:08
I feel like I get extra points for being a
- 02:08 - 02:09
band geek though.
- 02:09 - 02:11
I think that's true marching band geeks get extra points
- 02:12 - 02:12
in life.
- 02:12 - 02:16
Um I graduated from Bluefield College, I studied theater and
- 02:16 - 02:18
music so I can read music believe it or not.
- 02:19 - 02:23
Um I also, when I came out of college, I
- 02:23 - 02:27
stage managed at Kings Dominion, I worked for a acrobatics
- 02:27 - 02:32
group and um I have a fun story about how
- 02:33 - 02:34
the stage lit on fire and how I had to
- 02:34 - 02:36
put it out and I will tell that to you
- 02:36 - 02:37
when I get back.
- 02:38 - 02:43
Um so after that I bopped around, I worked at
- 02:44 - 02:46
Quantico for a while, but I ended up working as
- 02:46 - 02:49
a prop master at riverside, I helped work backstage.
- 02:50 - 02:53
I worked on the production staff and um in this
- 02:53 - 02:55
particular show, this is hunchback of Notre dame.
- 02:55 - 02:59
I just realized today that none of my props are
- 02:59 - 02:59
in the show.
- 02:59 - 03:01
However, I did build the rails that they are leaning
- 03:02 - 03:05
against. So good job, good job to me for building
- 03:05 - 03:09
rails. Um currently I am the senior stage manager at
- 03:09 - 03:12
christian youth theater fredericksburg which is a really fun place.
- 03:12 - 03:13
Mrs Hunter works there too.
- 03:14 - 03:18
She is my boss, technically she's a producer and um
- 03:19 - 03:22
this show is lame is and it's actually Mrs Hunter's
- 03:22 - 03:25
son who was waving the flag there before he dies.
- 03:26 - 03:28
Sad times, sad times.
- 03:29 - 03:32
Um I also worked part time as a weekend DJ
- 03:32 - 03:34
for me one of 1.5, you might have heard me
- 03:34 - 03:35
before, you might have heard my voice.
- 03:36 - 03:39
Um this is when I got to meet the cast
- 03:39 - 03:42
or not, the full cast, but these two kids from
- 03:42 - 03:47
Fuller House, I had never seen Fuller House when I
- 03:48 - 03:50
was asked to talk to them and spend time with
- 03:50 - 03:54
them. And um yeah, sometimes we have to interview people
- 03:55 - 03:59
that are like mildly famous and normally I don't know
- 03:59 - 04:00
who they are, I have to learn later.
- 04:01 - 04:02
So a couple of things about me.
- 04:03 - 04:04
I am the youngest of two.
- 04:05 - 04:06
That's my older brother James and I like to tease
- 04:07 - 04:08
him about not having a chin.
- 04:08 - 04:10
Uh probably not nice to me.
- 04:10 - 04:11
I was raised here in fredericksburg.
- 04:12 - 04:13
So I know everything about fredericksburg.
- 04:14 - 04:19
There's that um, this is my son stash who jumped
- 04:20 - 04:21
off the couch and ran away a little bit ago.
- 04:21 - 04:27
Um, I like to uh joke that his name is
- 04:27 - 04:31
not moustache, it's stashed because he only has a half
- 04:31 - 04:33
a stash, but nobody laughs at that.
- 04:33 - 04:34
Nobody thinks is as funny as I do.
- 04:35 - 04:38
So there's that, I'm going to ask you about your
- 04:38 - 04:39
sports that you play.
- 04:39 - 04:41
I did not play a full sport in high school.
- 04:42 - 04:46
I was in the arts, so I was in band
- 04:46 - 04:47
and I was in, um, shows.
- 04:48 - 04:50
So if you ask Miss Hunter, she'll tell you shows
- 04:51 - 04:52
are basically sport.
- 04:53 - 04:55
I mean you're gonna disagree with me, but that's true.
- 04:56 - 04:59
Um, a couple of my favorite things was gonna ask
- 04:59 - 05:00
you some of your favorite things.
- 05:00 - 05:02
So some of mine, let's talk about my favorite color.
- 05:03 - 05:05
My favorite colors are red, red.
- 05:05 - 05:07
Oh my goodness, my brain saw the orange.
- 05:08 - 05:09
I'm gonna tell you right now.
- 05:09 - 05:11
I have a PhD and sometimes I say things that
- 05:11 - 05:11
are weird.
- 05:12 - 05:12
I'm sorry.
- 05:12 - 05:15
Um my favorite colors are blue and yellow together specifically
- 05:16 - 05:17
together. Just perfect.
- 05:18 - 05:18
Perfect together.
- 05:19 - 05:24
Um, my favorite animals are really smart ones.
- 05:25 - 05:27
I love owls and I love elephants.
- 05:27 - 05:28
I am not always really smart.
- 05:29 - 05:30
So I guess I'm making up for something.
- 05:31 - 05:33
Um, my favorite snacks are Doritos.
- 05:33 - 05:36
I can eat a whole bag with myself, not the
- 05:36 - 05:36
ranch ones.
- 05:36 - 05:38
I don't like ranch, I don't like the ranch ones,
- 05:38 - 05:39
but I love regular Doritos so much.
- 05:40 - 05:40
I put them on everything.
- 05:41 - 05:44
Um, I love oatmeal cookies.
- 05:44 - 05:44
They're my favorite cookies.
- 05:45 - 05:47
I know that makes me an old person and I
- 05:47 - 05:48
thrive on it.
- 05:48 - 05:52
Um, my favorite subject in high school was banned.
- 05:52 - 05:54
I was banned geek and if you see that instrument
- 05:54 - 05:56
I'm holding, I'm in the back with a hat.
- 05:56 - 05:59
Um, that's called a bassoon and I still play that.
- 05:59 - 06:04
I played that, the concert, the, the spring concert last
- 06:04 - 06:06
year for the band, the school's band.
- 06:07 - 06:11
I also play flute, piccolo and um, I play guitar
- 06:12 - 06:15
and bass guitar and he's a little bit, a little
- 06:15 - 06:16
bit in worship team.
- 06:17 - 06:20
My favorite characters in all the media that I've watched
- 06:20 - 06:23
and read and whatnot would be Remus lupin and Tony
- 06:24 - 06:27
Stark. I grew up reading comics and uh, Tony Stark
- 06:27 - 06:30
has always been my favorite, but my favorite actor is
- 06:30 - 06:33
David Tennant who is Doctor Who or he was number
- 06:33 - 06:37
10 if you remember, Maybe not, maybe never seen Doctor
- 06:37 - 06:38
Who. That's awkward if you haven't.
- 06:38 - 06:43
Um, but I particularly love David Tennant in Hamlet.
- 06:44 - 06:46
I think that was his best production.
- 06:46 - 06:47
My favorite production of his anyways.
- 06:49 - 06:49
All right.
- 06:49 - 06:52
And then, um, some of my favorite movies, I love
- 06:53 - 06:54
Christopher Nolan.
- 06:54 - 06:57
So I love inception of Interstellar and I also love
- 06:57 - 07:01
this movie that nobody knows called night and Day.
- 07:01 - 07:02
It's just me.
- 07:02 - 07:04
I'm the only one who knows it tom cruise, isn't
- 07:04 - 07:04
it super fun.
- 07:05 - 07:05
I'll tell you about it later.
- 07:06 - 07:08
Um, my favorite Disney movie, Big Hero six.
- 07:09 - 07:12
Um, my best friend from Korea made me watch it
- 07:12 - 07:13
after. Oh, I'll tell you about that a minute.
- 07:14 - 07:17
Um, recently because I had never seen it before and
- 07:17 - 07:18
it's perfect, perfect movie.
- 07:18 - 07:19
Nothing wrong with it.
- 07:19 - 07:19
Love it.
- 07:19 - 07:21
And that is a hairy baby.
- 07:23 - 07:27
Alright. My favorite shows, my favorite tv show supernatural and
- 07:28 - 07:31
my favorite stage show is called Come From Away.
- 07:32 - 07:33
It's great Musical.
- 07:33 - 07:36
Um, so my favorite books, I love books, I love
- 07:36 - 07:38
reading, I love everything about it.
- 07:38 - 07:41
It's one of my favorite things to do and some
- 07:41 - 07:43
of my favorite video games, I was a competitive video
- 07:43 - 07:44
game player for a while.
- 07:44 - 07:48
Um, I played cod and battlefield specifically, but I ended
- 07:48 - 07:51
up getting exhausted on them and uh, no, I don't
- 07:51 - 07:52
do that now.
- 07:52 - 07:54
I really just play story driven games.
- 07:54 - 07:59
So they're like, it's like uh, interactive book for me.
- 07:59 - 08:00
That's why.
- 08:00 - 08:01
So that's some stuff about me.
- 08:02 - 08:04
So let's talk about the syllabus.
- 08:04 - 08:05
So Mrs Hunter is going to hand out your syllabus
- 08:06 - 08:06
to you.
- 08:06 - 08:08
I'm assuming she's doing that right now.
- 08:08 - 08:11
Um, while she's doing that, Go ahead and get out
- 08:11 - 08:14
some crowns and some markers or some pencils and stuff
- 08:15 - 08:18
and we are going to color our syllabus.
- 08:19 - 08:21
So you can decorate it however you want, you want
- 08:21 - 08:22
to draw stuff on it.
- 08:22 - 08:22
You want to cholera.
- 08:23 - 08:24
You want to do whatever, go for it.
- 08:24 - 08:26
We have to make them really boring this year.
- 08:26 - 08:29
And I am a renegade and I would like to
- 08:30 - 08:32
color them because I don't really put like memes and
- 08:32 - 08:33
stuff on it and we can't do that.
- 08:33 - 08:35
So go ahead and color your syllabus.
- 08:35 - 08:39
But while you're doing it, underline the things that you
- 08:39 - 08:39
think are important.
- 08:40 - 08:44
And when I get back on Monday, because I'll be
- 08:44 - 08:45
back on Monday and I'll tell you why I'm out
- 08:45 - 08:46
in the second year.
- 08:46 - 08:48
But when I get back on Monday I will take
- 08:49 - 08:49
them. I'll look at them.
- 08:50 - 08:51
You can keep them, but I'll look at them and
- 08:52 - 08:53
show them to me and I'll give you 10 extra
- 08:53 - 08:54
points for extra credit.
- 08:55 - 08:56
Super fun and easy.
- 08:56 - 08:57
And all you have to do is color your little
- 08:57 - 08:58
bits and underline it.
- 08:59 - 09:01
Um so why I'm out because I forgot to throw
- 09:01 - 09:04
that out, I had an emergency surgery a couple weeks
- 09:04 - 09:07
ago and I'm still healing from it.
- 09:07 - 09:09
I had to get my gall bladder removed and if
- 09:09 - 09:11
you don't know what that is basically, it's an organ
- 09:12 - 09:13
that I don't have that you do.
- 09:13 - 09:14
It doesn't do too much.
- 09:14 - 09:16
I mean like it's important, but it doesn't do too
- 09:16 - 09:18
much and you can live without it.
- 09:18 - 09:19
So here we are.
- 09:19 - 09:22
So I'm just healing from that and I'll see you
- 09:22 - 09:24
monday. So that's why Mrs Hunter's here and we love
- 09:25 - 09:26
her. Thank her before you leave.
- 09:27 - 09:28
Um So let's look at syllabus.
- 09:29 - 09:31
So a couple of things about, you know, I could
- 09:32 - 09:36
move a computer instead of myself as I move myself
- 09:37 - 09:37
and the computer.
- 09:38 - 09:39
Hi. Yeah, guys, this is my life.
- 09:40 - 09:40
I'm sorry.
- 09:41 - 09:42
Welcome to my ted talk.
- 09:42 - 09:45
So the syllabus things are going to need for your
- 09:45 - 09:49
syllabus. Um You're gonna need some kind of notebook, I'm
- 09:49 - 09:49
gonna call it a journal.
- 09:50 - 09:51
You're gonna have a couple of writing assignments, they won't
- 09:52 - 09:52
be too long.
- 09:53 - 09:55
Um Oh, you're gonna need a pencil.
- 09:56 - 10:00
Um Pens are okay, but in drama, we really only
- 10:00 - 10:04
use pencils because you will change your mind about things
- 10:04 - 10:06
and it's pencils are just better.
- 10:06 - 10:06
Pencils are better.
- 10:07 - 10:09
Their superior um highlighters are important.
- 10:10 - 10:12
You're going to need a highlighter if you don't have
- 10:13 - 10:13
one, I have extras.
- 10:14 - 10:15
If you forget yours, I always have extras.
- 10:16 - 10:18
Um and we can wipe them down for um covid
- 10:19 - 10:23
safety, but um it's better and easier if you have
- 10:23 - 10:25
your own that's that's all there is to it.
- 10:25 - 10:26
It's just easier.
- 10:27 - 10:27
All right.
- 10:27 - 10:31
Um Next let's talk about your grading scale.
- 10:34 - 10:36
All right, So for your grading scale, um test quizzes.
- 10:37 - 10:40
Classwork. Those do not make the heaviest weight of your
- 10:40 - 10:43
class. This class is unique because participation is the most
- 10:44 - 10:45
important part of the class.
- 10:46 - 10:48
Um that is that's going to be the heaviest weight
- 10:48 - 10:49
in your grade is from participation.
- 10:50 - 10:51
A lot of this is work ethic.
- 10:51 - 10:53
a lot of this is attitude and I'll talk about
- 10:53 - 10:56
that in a minute, but most of its participation, it's
- 10:56 - 10:58
the things we do during the class time.
- 10:59 - 11:00
Are you working with your group?
- 11:00 - 11:02
Are you, do you get up and do the exercise,
- 11:02 - 11:03
whatever it may be?
- 11:04 - 11:07
Um You will have some written tests, but most of
- 11:07 - 11:10
your tests, quizzes and class work are going to be
- 11:10 - 11:14
performance oriented, so it's gonna be things you do, it
- 11:14 - 11:15
could be a script, it could be writing a scene,
- 11:16 - 11:18
whatever it's not going to always be a written test
- 11:19 - 11:21
or written quiz or whatever It could be.
- 11:22 - 11:24
We're gonna write some where you can actually do some
- 11:24 - 11:26
story writing later in the year um and that is
- 11:26 - 11:27
100% writing.
- 11:27 - 11:31
However, it's not the majority, the majority of vast majority
- 11:31 - 11:34
is going to be like performance oriented.
- 11:34 - 11:36
So let's talk about participation.
- 11:37 - 11:40
So You will receive 10 points a day for participation.
- 11:41 - 11:42
That's 50 points a week.
- 11:42 - 11:45
You're going to see that 50 on your grade book.
- 11:45 - 11:50
Um So I will take away your participation points for
- 11:51 - 11:51
any major description.
- 11:52 - 11:54
I'm not talking about going to the bathroom or whatever
- 11:54 - 11:58
I'm talking about if you are speaking out in class
- 11:58 - 12:00
after I specifically asked you not to, if you are
- 12:00 - 12:03
not doing the assignment that's going to get your points
- 12:03 - 12:07
taken away if you are playing video games on your
- 12:07 - 12:10
ipad um If you're using your ipad and appropriately whatever
- 12:11 - 12:12
that's gonna get it taken away.
- 12:13 - 12:15
Um And we do use ipad a lot.
- 12:15 - 12:17
So I'm always watching to see are you actually using
- 12:18 - 12:19
your ipad for what it's for?
- 12:19 - 12:23
So I will take it and you will lose participation
- 12:23 - 12:26
points. Um Also it's about your attitude to are you
- 12:27 - 12:28
being disrespectful to me?
- 12:28 - 12:30
Are you being disrespectful to your classmates?
- 12:30 - 12:31
Are you being rude?
- 12:31 - 12:32
Whatever it might be on.
- 12:33 - 12:34
That will take your great way.
- 12:34 - 12:36
That will take your participation grade away and a poor
- 12:36 - 12:38
attitude is going to get you a poor grade.
- 12:39 - 12:40
So keep that in mind.
- 12:40 - 12:42
Um No let's not just say that you can't have
- 12:42 - 12:42
bad days.
- 12:42 - 12:43
We all have bad days.
- 12:43 - 12:45
I have a PhD.
- 12:45 - 12:48
I um I get really anxious and I have really
- 12:48 - 12:50
really bad days and it's okay to have bad days.
- 12:51 - 12:53
But the trick is you gotta talk to me, you
- 12:53 - 12:56
need to come to send me a message if you
- 12:56 - 12:56
don't want to talk to me.
- 12:56 - 12:57
So I need email me like Miss Walters.
- 12:58 - 12:59
I'm really not feeling it today.
- 13:00 - 13:01
I've had such and such happened to me.
- 13:01 - 13:01
I'm super stressed.
- 13:02 - 13:02
I got three tests whatever.
- 13:03 - 13:06
Um And I can't do the assignment today or I
- 13:06 - 13:08
just really can't don't feel like it today.
- 13:09 - 13:12
Um talk to me about it before class send me
- 13:12 - 13:15
an email and we will work it out together, we
- 13:16 - 13:18
will discuss it, we'll find if we need to move
- 13:18 - 13:19
an assignment that's fine.
- 13:19 - 13:21
If we need to make up an assignment that's fine.
- 13:21 - 13:24
Um just talk to me and I will, I will
- 13:24 - 13:25
work with you 100%.
- 13:26 - 13:27
I will work with you.
- 13:27 - 13:30
Um On that note though, if you are taking a
- 13:31 - 13:33
bad day, if you're taking whatever taking an out, you
- 13:34 - 13:38
need to, you need to contact me to make sure
- 13:38 - 13:42
that you are reaching out to me for when and
- 13:43 - 13:44
how to fix that grade.
- 13:44 - 13:47
So this goes for six days to if you miss
- 13:47 - 13:51
an assignment, you're responsible for making sure that you reach
- 13:51 - 13:54
out to me on when to to fix the grade,
- 13:55 - 13:57
how we're gonna fix a grade, whatever, that's your responsibility
- 13:58 - 14:00
assignments you miss are your responsibility.
- 14:01 - 14:04
Um And what it really comes down to is that
- 14:05 - 14:08
I am the drama teacher for all of the classes.
- 14:09 - 14:12
I'm also the lead sound technician for the school and
- 14:12 - 14:15
I also am the artistic director for our company um
- 14:16 - 14:20
for our theater all theater programs are basically a company
- 14:20 - 14:21
will explain what that means later.
- 14:22 - 14:24
But I am the artistic director for that means I
- 14:24 - 14:27
do everything I do the planning and the building and
- 14:27 - 14:30
whatnot. And I that on top of my HD and
- 14:30 - 14:32
I cannot remember your grade.
- 14:33 - 14:35
So I really need you to be on top of
- 14:35 - 14:36
your grade.
- 14:36 - 14:38
That's all it is and I know this is a
- 14:38 - 14:43
more high school um expectation, but you guys are very
- 14:43 - 14:44
mature for your age and I think that you can
- 14:45 - 14:46
100% handle it.
- 14:46 - 14:49
So just remember you are responsible for your own grade
- 14:50 - 14:52
um classrooms.
- 14:52 - 14:53
Some classroom rules.
- 14:53 - 14:54
No gum in class.
- 14:55 - 14:57
I've choked on gum doing improv games, so we don't
- 14:57 - 14:57
do that anymore.
- 14:58 - 15:01
Um But you may eat and drink um As long
- 15:01 - 15:03
as I don't find trash where it's not supposed to
- 15:03 - 15:05
be, trash needs to go to the trash, can put
- 15:05 - 15:05
it in the trash.
- 15:06 - 15:08
Do not let me find it on the floor or
- 15:08 - 15:11
I will remove your right to eat and drink in
- 15:11 - 15:11
my room.
- 15:12 - 15:12
Probably not.
- 15:12 - 15:15
You probably still drink water, but I will remove it.
- 15:15 - 15:17
And that's also if I can't figure out which class
- 15:17 - 15:19
did it, I will take away the right for all
- 15:19 - 15:23
my classes, so don't ruin it for the rest of
- 15:23 - 15:23
the classes too.
- 15:24 - 15:28
Um Please please please please please go to the bathroom
- 15:29 - 15:31
or to the lock or whatever you gotta do before
- 15:32 - 15:32
you come to class.
- 15:32 - 15:35
Please don't ask me in the middle of class if
- 15:35 - 15:37
it's an emergency, I get it.
- 15:37 - 15:39
If you got a p it, something happens, you're fine.
- 15:40 - 15:46
But use your time wisely and go before I'll give
- 15:46 - 15:46
you a hint.
- 15:47 - 15:50
I will not count you late to class unless you're
- 15:50 - 15:52
like 10 15 minutes late.
- 15:52 - 15:55
So if you need five minutes to go to the
- 15:55 - 15:56
bathroom, go to the bathroom.
- 15:57 - 15:57
I'm not gonna count you late.
- 15:58 - 16:00
I'd rather you go to the bathroom then believe in
- 16:00 - 16:01
the middle of my lesson.
- 16:02 - 16:05
Um So go before also.
- 16:05 - 16:08
I know it says to, but that is wrong.
- 16:09 - 16:12
It's actually one person that changed today because I thought
- 16:13 - 16:14
I had to haul passes and I only have one.
- 16:15 - 16:18
So only one person is allowed out of the class
- 16:18 - 16:19
at a time.
- 16:20 - 16:22
So only one person can have the hall pass.
- 16:23 - 16:25
And um this is Hunter is going to explain how
- 16:25 - 16:28
the hall pass works later, but only one person at
- 16:29 - 16:29
a time.
- 16:29 - 16:34
Um she'll talk about the the form basically, there's um
- 16:37 - 16:39
a QR code, you'll use your ipad to fill out
- 16:40 - 16:41
the forms on when you go and when you return
- 16:42 - 16:44
because there is a return one or if you come
- 16:44 - 16:46
late to class, you'll have to fill that out too.
- 16:47 - 16:50
Cool. So let's talk about shows.
- 16:51 - 16:53
Um There are two shows every year.
- 16:54 - 16:56
You must see at least one.
- 16:57 - 16:58
You got to see at least one.
- 16:59 - 17:03
Um You are encouraged to audition for them Now.
- 17:03 - 17:07
Middle schoolers are only open to audition for the musical,
- 17:08 - 17:11
which is in the spring now, I'll tell you, I
- 17:11 - 17:14
have not bought rights to shows yet, which fine rights
- 17:14 - 17:16
just means I have the right to do the show.
- 17:17 - 17:18
I haven't caught them yet.
- 17:18 - 17:19
So I can't tell you what the shows are yet,
- 17:20 - 17:22
but I should have it in the next week or
- 17:22 - 17:28
so. So, um yes, I'll tell you when the shows
- 17:28 - 17:30
are. But yes, you you are more than welcome to
- 17:30 - 17:32
audition for them and if you are in the show,
- 17:32 - 17:33
you don't have to see a show.
- 17:34 - 17:35
Obviously you're in the show.
- 17:36 - 17:39
Cool. Or if you work on the show, you don't
- 17:39 - 17:40
have to go through the shop because you worked on
- 17:40 - 17:40
the show.
- 17:41 - 17:42
Uh, cool.
- 17:42 - 17:44
So some other extra credit things.
- 17:44 - 17:46
Um, one thing that people do, I told you about
- 17:46 - 17:48
your syllabus that counts for 10 points extra credits.
- 17:48 - 17:52
One thing that people don't take advantage of in my
- 17:52 - 17:53
class, they always forget this.
- 17:53 - 17:56
If you go to see any kind of performance, this
- 17:56 - 17:59
could be like a magic show or like a music
- 18:00 - 18:01
concert, orchestra concert or whatever.
- 18:02 - 18:03
Um, are acrobats.
- 18:04 - 18:07
If you're going to see any kind of performance outside
- 18:08 - 18:11
of school and you bring me a copy of the
- 18:11 - 18:14
playbill or you bring or you bring me pictures or
- 18:14 - 18:16
something, I'll give you 10 points extra credit just for
- 18:16 - 18:19
going to see the show for supporting the arts.
- 18:19 - 18:22
So yeah, any time and this is for the summer
- 18:22 - 18:23
to, if you went over the summer, bring it and
- 18:23 - 18:24
I'll give you credit.
- 18:25 - 18:27
So if you see something online, if you see sound
- 18:27 - 18:29
and sight and sound one of their live performances online,
- 18:29 - 18:33
please send it to me and I will, um, or
- 18:33 - 18:34
send me a picture or a screenshot or whatever.
- 18:34 - 18:37
If your ticket and I will give you extra credit.
- 18:37 - 18:38
So yeah, use that.
- 18:39 - 18:41
That is a good way to get free extra credit.
- 18:41 - 18:44
So finally, here's some takeaways things you need to take
- 18:44 - 18:45
away from this.
- 18:45 - 18:46
No. one drama is fun.
- 18:47 - 18:49
I feel weird leaning over like this, but I'm going
- 18:49 - 18:51
to um dramas, fun.
- 18:51 - 18:53
Drama is supposed to be a fun class.
- 18:53 - 18:54
It should be an easy class.
- 18:54 - 18:55
It should not be stressful.
- 18:55 - 18:57
Um It's a lot of games.
- 18:58 - 19:02
It is story playing, uh storytelling, it's playing, but it's
- 19:02 - 19:03
also work.
- 19:03 - 19:05
And that's number two, Drama is not pe class.
- 19:06 - 19:08
You are not here for the fun of the game.
- 19:08 - 19:11
You are here to work because we're doing theater is
- 19:12 - 19:16
work. Um So you are not here to goof around,
- 19:16 - 19:19
You're not here to um play tag with your friends
- 19:20 - 19:20
or whatever.
- 19:20 - 19:21
You are here to do drama things.
- 19:22 - 19:25
Um And here's like we're not trying to be mean,
- 19:25 - 19:26
but we have to consider too.
- 19:27 - 19:30
There are times where there's so much work involved and
- 19:30 - 19:34
there's there's um a lot of creativity involved and things
- 19:34 - 19:36
that you may not be interested in or things that
- 19:37 - 19:40
you may not be um like so or you may
- 19:40 - 19:43
not enjoy as much and that's okay not to enjoy
- 19:43 - 19:46
it. However, if you get to a point where you're
- 19:46 - 19:49
like, I don't enjoy the material, I really don't like
- 19:49 - 19:51
reading and I really don't like storytelling that much.
- 19:52 - 19:53
I just don't enjoy it.
- 19:53 - 19:54
It's not my cup of tea, that's fine.
- 19:55 - 19:57
But you might want to consider that the class might
- 19:57 - 19:59
not be for you, I don't this is my son.
- 20:00 - 20:00
That was not of the earlier.
- 20:01 - 20:04
Um I don't want you to go through the whole
- 20:05 - 20:13
year with the uh in a class that you aren't
- 20:14 - 20:17
enjoying or a class that you don't feel like you
- 20:17 - 20:19
really like the material very much.
- 20:20 - 20:22
Um And let your grades suffer because that's what happens
- 20:23 - 20:25
normally, is if they don't enjoy the material, the grade
- 20:25 - 20:26
suffers because their attitude suffers.
- 20:27 - 20:30
So, I would rather you get out before it becomes
- 20:31 - 20:33
a problem for you and me.
- 20:33 - 20:35
So, um, I won't be mad at you.
- 20:35 - 20:37
I promise there will be no hard feelings whatsoever.
- 20:38 - 20:42
So, um if you do feel that way, please please
- 20:42 - 20:43
please let me know.
- 20:44 - 20:44
We'll get you.
- 20:44 - 20:45
Well, it's fine.
- 20:46 - 20:48
You just don't want you to suffer in the class
- 20:48 - 20:50
if you don't like it because some people get in
- 20:50 - 20:52
and they're thinking that it's all games, that it's not
- 20:52 - 20:55
in his work, you'll be writing, you'll be doing research,
- 20:56 - 20:58
you're going to be doing, you're gonna have to get
- 20:58 - 21:00
up in front of the class and if that's not
- 21:00 - 21:03
something that sounds interesting thing to you, then this isn't
- 21:03 - 21:03
the class for you.
- 21:04 - 21:05
Cool. Alright.
- 21:05 - 21:07
Now that that's out of the way, let's talk about
- 21:07 - 21:08
the other thing.
- 21:08 - 21:10
Um Drama is supposed to be a safe place.
- 21:11 - 21:13
It needs to be a place where people can feel
- 21:13 - 21:16
free to be creative sometimes when being creative, you're going
- 21:17 - 21:18
to make embarrassing choices.
- 21:18 - 21:18
it happens.
- 21:20 - 21:23
But the thing is if you feel like you're going
- 21:23 - 21:27
to be made fun of for those choices, then it's
- 21:27 - 21:27
not fun anymore.
- 21:28 - 21:29
And then it's just upsetting.
- 21:29 - 21:32
Nobody likes being made fun of for making embarrassing choices
- 21:33 - 21:34
or making silly choices or goofy choices.
- 21:36 - 21:41
So anyone who is taking part in making the atmosphere
- 21:42 - 21:46
of the class feel like it is unsafe and that
- 21:46 - 21:50
could be physically or emotionally or otherwise, um we're gonna
- 21:50 - 21:52
have a discussion and it could result from the removal
- 21:53 - 21:55
from the classroom for the day and if it continues,
- 21:56 - 21:57
it will result in a removal from the class.
- 21:58 - 22:00
Um I can't have people being bleeding class.
- 22:01 - 22:02
I can't have people being judged in class.
- 22:02 - 22:05
That just ruins um the trust that we're trying to
- 22:05 - 22:08
build, we're gonna talk more about that tomorrow, but we're
- 22:08 - 22:08
trying to build trust.
- 22:09 - 22:10
We're trying to build a place where we can all
- 22:10 - 22:13
be creative and have fun and creativity.
- 22:15 - 22:17
You're going to find if you are truly open to
- 22:18 - 22:22
being as creative as possible without the fear of judgment.
- 22:23 - 22:25
It's a really freeing thing.
- 22:25 - 22:29
But this goes both ways you for you to feel
- 22:29 - 22:31
that you can't judge others, you have to have that
- 22:31 - 22:33
openness that they can do whatever they can be creative
- 22:34 - 22:35
without being judged by me.
- 22:36 - 22:37
Makes sense.
- 22:37 - 22:37
Just be nice.
- 22:38 - 22:38
Just be nice.
- 22:38 - 22:39
That's the goal here.
- 22:39 - 22:42
Um And lastly dramas about communication, you need to communicate
- 22:43 - 22:45
with me, um you need to communicate with your peers
- 22:45 - 22:46
but mostly communicate with me.
- 22:46 - 22:49
If you're having a bad day, talk to me if
- 22:49 - 22:51
you're worried about your grade, talk to me.
- 22:51 - 22:54
If you don't understand something in the class, talk to
- 22:54 - 22:56
me. I am one of the chilis teachers in the
- 22:56 - 22:56
whole school.
- 22:57 - 23:01
I promise I will like I'm so chill, you need
- 23:01 - 23:04
to move an assignment will move it, you need to
- 23:04 - 23:06
do whatever, we'll fix it and try to be as
- 23:07 - 23:10
accommodating as possible because this is supposed to be a
- 23:10 - 23:10
fun class.
- 23:11 - 23:12
It doesn't need to be hard, it doesn't need to
- 23:13 - 23:16
be stressful, it needs to be fun and worthwhile and
- 23:17 - 23:22
you need to get um you need to get out
- 23:22 - 23:26
of it, the work you put in but it should
- 23:27 - 23:27
all be fun.
- 23:28 - 23:32
It should not be stressful, so please talk to me
- 23:32 - 23:33
and that also goes outside of class.
- 23:34 - 23:35
If there's things that are bothering you outside of class,
- 23:35 - 23:37
I'm here to talk to you, I'm super chill.
- 23:37 - 23:41
Um and I have been through a whole lot so
- 23:42 - 23:43
if you ever need anyone to talk to you please
- 23:44 - 23:47
I'm here and I've got a great listening here And
- 23:47 - 23:51
especially there's a period I am here for um I
- 23:51 - 23:53
normally go to rehearsal right after this but I normally
- 23:53 - 23:55
have 10-15 minutes that I can sit and chat.
- 23:55 - 23:59
So I am here for you whatever your you need,
- 24:00 - 24:02
I am here to help but that's that's the gist,
- 24:03 - 24:05
that's drama class and a whole um this is just
- 24:05 - 24:06
going to talk to you a little bit more about
- 24:06 - 24:07
the bathroom past thing.
- 24:07 - 24:10
But um that's it.
- 24:11 - 24:13
We're going to have a whole lot of fun this
- 24:13 - 24:14
year. Like I said, it is a lot of work.
- 24:15 - 24:18
We're gonna be doing a lot of different things, but
- 24:18 - 24:20
I think you're gonna like it.
- 24:20 - 24:22
I think you're gonna enjoy, especially if you love books
- 24:22 - 24:25
and you love stories and you love movies and you
- 24:25 - 24:28
love video games, even like the storytelling aspect, you're going
