Hello for my ted talk today. I'm going to be talking about
- 00:05 - 00:07
being an open book in the classroom.
- 00:07 - 00:10
Um and answering kind of those hard questions
- 00:10 - 00:12
that most teachers don't want to answer.
- 00:15 - 00:16
All right.
- 00:16 - 00:17
Um
- 00:18 - 00:21
This was one of the main topics that shouldn't be talked about in school.
- 00:21 - 00:24
These are the three main things that I wanted to cover that
- 00:24 - 00:26
I felt the most passionate about and learn the most about.
- 00:27 - 00:31
So L. G. B. T. Q. Community, racism and sexuality.
- 00:31 - 00:32
Um
- 00:33 - 00:36
So the three main thing I want to talk about is
- 00:37 - 00:39
life is an open book. Why not in schools
- 00:40 - 00:40
um
- 00:42 - 00:44
in the classroom you're going to get asked certain
- 00:44 - 00:47
things that some parents still think that you should
- 00:48 - 00:53
be open to talk about in the classroom. So that can be LGBTQ families where
- 00:53 - 00:56
you're trying to explain to a kid why he has two moms
- 00:56 - 00:58
versus a mom and a dad or why he has two dads.
- 00:59 - 01:01
Um and then
- 01:02 - 01:03
racism
- 01:03 - 01:07
again, kids are gonna ask you what color skin um
- 01:07 - 01:09
they have versus their friend
- 01:10 - 01:13
um why their parents don't like that color skin.
- 01:14 - 01:15
Um things like that, unfortunately.
- 01:15 - 01:21
And then sexuality um sexuality is probably the biggest one that I learned about.
- 01:21 - 01:22
Um
- 01:23 - 01:24
just for the fact that
- 01:24 - 01:27
you don't think when the kids in elementary school
- 01:27 - 01:30
that he's going to be kind of really talking about sexuality,
- 01:30 - 01:33
but some kids know at a very young age.
- 01:33 - 01:36
Um but they're not the same and that they're very different.
- 01:36 - 01:37
Um
- 01:38 - 01:39
So to go with those
- 01:40 - 01:42
resources, resources
- 01:43 - 01:48
that I will use the most and I found the most beneficial. So that is
- 01:48 - 01:53
gender book. Um It was a very cute creative book. Um
- 01:54 - 01:58
It wasn't your standard textbook, so that was nice. It had a lot of color.
- 01:58 - 02:03
Um It was very interesting for kids to see. Um I found it very interesting.
- 02:03 - 02:04
It had a lot of good facts.
- 02:05 - 02:10
Um school and Children of L. G. B. T. Q. Community. Um This is very sad to read
- 02:11 - 02:12
for the fact that
- 02:14 - 02:19
kids should feel safe in the classroom and the fact that they're not, it's terrible.
- 02:19 - 02:25
It shouldn't matter if you have two moms, two dads, just one mom, just one dad. Um
- 02:26 - 02:30
You shouldn't make a child feel unsafe because of who their parents are,
- 02:30 - 02:31
one that's not their fault
- 02:32 - 02:37
and two even if they are in that situation, like I said, it's not their fault
- 02:37 - 02:40
And then Heather's mom's getting married was another very beneficial one.
- 02:41 - 02:42
Um Just for the fact that
- 02:43 - 02:45
showed what the kids in the classroom, we're going to
- 02:46 - 02:49
be asking questions for how to explain that in the classroom.
- 02:49 - 02:52
I know one of kind of the bigger things
- 02:52 - 02:58
that I've talked about is being afraid to ask the questions for the fact that
- 02:59 - 03:01
parents aren't worse than the Children.
- 03:01 - 03:03
The Children want to be open and honest with you.
- 03:03 - 03:06
Um The parents are the ones that
- 03:07 - 03:10
you tell their kids something and they don't think you should have
- 03:10 - 03:12
told them that or they didn't want their kid to know about that
- 03:13 - 03:16
at a certain point their kids are going to ask the questions that to
- 03:16 - 03:20
you as a teacher that they might not feel comfortable asking as their parents.
- 03:21 - 03:23
Um, you just have to be open with the parents
- 03:23 - 03:28
tell them, Hey, this is what they asked me. This is what I told them.
- 03:28 - 03:32
Um this is why I told them this because they have a blank.
- 03:33 - 03:33
Um
- 03:34 - 03:38
just like I said, just being considered the parents that you,
- 03:38 - 03:39
they might not want you to share.
- 03:39 - 03:39
But
- 03:40 - 03:43
sometimes if the kid is persistent and you share anyway,
- 03:44 - 03:46
um, this is an outside source I found
- 03:46 - 03:52
um it is a study that was done at a university and it was all about
- 03:53 - 03:54
uh huh
- 03:55 - 03:58
effective communication skills um for your students
- 03:59 - 04:04
and it talked about um not being afraid of silence to take a moment to think
- 04:05 - 04:11
um using clear and precise terms, knowing your students listening carefully.
- 04:11 - 04:13
Being sensitive to students behaviors.
- 04:13 - 04:14
Mm
- 04:15 - 04:17
promote equality in the classroom.
- 04:18 - 04:18
Um,
- 04:19 - 04:22
And I thought those were, those were like the 10,
- 04:23 - 04:25
Some of the 10 main things that they talked about
- 04:25 - 04:27
and it's just a good website and there's a video
- 04:28 - 04:30
talking about how to have good,
- 04:30 - 04:33
open communication and conversations with the kids.
- 04:34 - 04:35
Um
- 04:36 - 04:39
again, going from this body language too.
- 04:39 - 04:40
Um,
- 04:40 - 04:42
just taking him over to silence them.
- 04:42 - 04:46
I ask you a question and instead of answering right away, you need to take a step back
- 04:47 - 04:52
and think about what is the student asking me? Um Why are they asking me this?
- 04:53 - 04:53
Um
- 04:54 - 04:58
It was just a really good article. Um And I would recommend this for people to use.
- 04:59 - 04:59
Uh huh.
- 05:00 - 05:05
But yeah, overall this semester's taught me a lot when it comes to
- 05:05 - 05:07
answering questions for kids. Um
- 05:10 - 05:13
I will be interested to see in what the first kind of
- 05:13 - 05:17
tough quote unquote conversations I have with families are and Children.
- 05:17 - 05:20
Um I definitely do feel more prepared.
- 05:20 - 05:23
Uhm I will be using the references like I said the gender book.
- 05:24 - 05:30
Um just kind of referring back to the L. G. B. T. Q. Articles and the mom articles
- 05:30 - 05:36
and then definitely um The article that the university put out about how to
- 05:36 - 05:39
Communicate effectively because they had kind of all
- 05:39 - 05:42
the 10 main points that I've learned throughout the
- 05:42 - 05:44
semester wrapped up into one and they had good
- 05:44 - 05:46
helpful videos on the link that I posted.
- 05:47 - 05:48
Thank you.
