everyone. Uh, this might be a little strange, because I'm
- 00:04 - 00:07
no doubt standing in front of you wearing a mask
- 00:07 - 00:12
right now, but I wanted to talk with you without
- 00:12 - 00:12
a mask on.
- 00:13 - 00:15
Basically. So the best way for me to do that
- 00:15 - 00:16
was to record a video.
- 00:17 - 00:19
I want to tell you a little bit about how
- 00:19 - 00:19
things work.
- 00:20 - 00:22
My classroom, a few procedures and also ah, little bit
- 00:23 - 00:24
about the class itself and also a little bit about
- 00:25 - 00:26
me. Let's continue.
- 00:28 - 00:30
So, first of all, welcome to American literature.
- 00:31 - 00:34
Uh, I'm really excited about this course.
- 00:35 - 00:37
I'm really excited that you're in this course, and I'd
- 00:37 - 00:39
like to tell you a little bit about my rash
- 00:39 - 00:40
behind it.
- 00:40 - 00:43
So the class is pretty much meant to teach you
- 00:43 - 00:47
about American authors, and I teach chronologically.
- 00:48 - 00:49
So we go through history and we talk about different
- 00:50 - 00:53
historical events, and then we talk about how the authors
- 00:53 - 00:54
responded to those events.
- 00:55 - 00:58
Ah, we also throw in just a little bit of
- 00:58 - 00:58
composition as well.
- 00:59 - 01:01
We do a lot of writing about literature in this
- 01:01 - 01:05
class. We do a lot of writing just about things
- 01:05 - 01:07
that you're interested in in connection with American culture.
- 01:08 - 01:10
So that's how the class works.
- 01:10 - 01:13
Basically, when you leave this classroom or by the time
- 01:14 - 01:16
you leave this classroom, my goal is the jewel know
- 01:17 - 01:19
a little bit more of how to identify and analyse
- 01:20 - 01:24
different literary movements In their culture, that means well.
- 01:25 - 01:27
But later we'll also be doing a lot of writing
- 01:28 - 01:29
about literature, as it was saying.
- 01:29 - 01:31
So I wanna make sure that you understand a little
- 01:31 - 01:32
more about how to write about literature.
- 01:33 - 01:35
I also want you to know how to conduct long
- 01:36 - 01:36
term research.
- 01:37 - 01:40
Can t use your findings to solve a problem because
- 01:41 - 01:42
that's gonna be a big project that work on.
- 01:42 - 01:44
It's going to be really useful for you later on.
- 01:44 - 01:46
I also want you to know how to work collaboratively
- 01:47 - 01:50
with other people while still taking on a responsibility for
- 01:50 - 01:50
your own work, too.
- 01:51 - 01:52
So what we working with groups?
- 01:52 - 01:55
Quite a bit, but you'll have responsibilities within that group
- 01:55 - 01:56
that are your own.
- 01:56 - 01:57
So will be expected.
- 01:58 - 02:00
Teoh contribute pretty quickly.
- 02:01 - 02:03
Uh, so we'll talk a little more about what that
- 02:03 - 02:06
looks like practically later on in the clasp.
- 02:07 - 02:11
Let's talk just a little bit about just some of
- 02:11 - 02:13
my expectations about procedures.
- 02:14 - 02:16
Now each of these slides is sort of broken down
- 02:16 - 02:20
into before in school, in person, versus if we're going
- 02:20 - 02:21
completely to you learning.
- 02:23 - 02:25
I know that we're doing a hybrid thing here the
- 02:25 - 02:26
very beginning of the year.
- 02:26 - 02:29
So ah, was in person is going to be.
- 02:31 - 02:33
That's how I'm going to basically follow things up until
- 02:33 - 02:35
the point where we have toe all go to the
- 02:35 - 02:36
learning all the time.
- 02:37 - 02:39
So just because you are seeing something virtually doesn't mean
- 02:39 - 02:40
I'm not following the in person procedure.
- 02:41 - 02:43
I am still following the in person procedure.
- 02:44 - 02:46
Like I said, up until the point where we all
- 02:46 - 02:48
have to be in the learning all the time.
- 02:49 - 02:52
So let's talk about communication, Comic.
- 02:53 - 02:55
If you're in this class, primarily, I'm going to be
- 02:55 - 02:55
sending you emails.
- 02:56 - 02:58
I'm gonna send you an email every single day because
- 02:58 - 03:00
our daily email is gonna tell you what was due
- 03:00 - 03:00
last night.
- 03:01 - 03:03
It's going to tell you what we're going to be
- 03:04 - 03:04
doing a class today.
- 03:04 - 03:06
It's going to tell you homework that you'll have for
- 03:07 - 03:08
tonight and then I will also tell you anything.
- 03:09 - 03:12
As for his tested quizzes coming up on and I
- 03:12 - 03:13
give you about a month's notice Fantastic.
- 03:13 - 03:15
Was is So I try to give you quite a
- 03:15 - 03:16
bit of heads up for that.
- 03:17 - 03:19
Um, in addition to the daily email that you'll be
- 03:19 - 03:22
getting in your inbox every single day from me, you'll
- 03:22 - 03:25
also see that I'm gonna post on teams every day
- 03:25 - 03:26
the same content.
- 03:26 - 03:29
It's not gonna be anything different, but just so that
- 03:29 - 03:30
you have it all in one place.
- 03:30 - 03:30
Oppose that.
- 03:32 - 03:34
Another thing that you're going to have for me is
- 03:34 - 03:39
a calendar that is the projected agenda for the whole
- 03:39 - 03:42
semester. So that's something to change, of course, but it's
- 03:42 - 03:46
something that I'm going to be giving you at the
- 03:46 - 03:47
very beginning of the semester, and then I'll if I
- 03:47 - 03:49
have to amend it a lot, I'll I'll give you
- 03:49 - 03:52
another copy of it, are all post another copy of
- 03:52 - 03:52
it digitally.
- 03:54 - 03:56
Um, and it just tells you what we're doing overall
- 03:57 - 03:59
basically gives you an overview of all the units of
- 03:59 - 03:59
the big projects.
- 04:01 - 04:04
So I'm also going to be giving you daily reminders.
- 04:04 - 04:07
Class is going to give you verbal reminders, and they'll
- 04:07 - 04:09
also be, uh, Homer will also be written on the
- 04:10 - 04:10
chalkboard as well.
- 04:11 - 04:12
I'm either in the front of the back of the
- 04:12 - 04:16
room. So that's how things will go in person As
- 04:16 - 04:18
Hersey learn and goes, The only thing is really gonna
- 04:18 - 04:20
change is that I'm gonna try to give you a
- 04:20 - 04:25
lot Were detailed instructions basically, in my daily emails and
- 04:25 - 04:26
also in the team's post.
- 04:27 - 04:29
You're gonna have a lot more of, like, step by
- 04:29 - 04:32
step process written out there since I'm not gonna be
- 04:32 - 04:34
in front of you on then.
- 04:34 - 04:36
Also, uh, we'll have the same semester calendar and should
- 04:37 - 04:42
be updated with probably less content and probably should throw
- 04:42 - 04:45
out of you things if we go to completely learning
- 04:45 - 04:48
on. And then we'll also be doing a lot more
- 04:48 - 04:49
posting to message boards.
- 04:49 - 04:52
Inter knitted dot com It's probably going to change.
- 04:53 - 04:54
So that's communication.
- 04:56 - 04:57
I'd like to talk to you next just a little
- 04:57 - 05:01
bit about the format procedures we're gonna be using when
- 05:02 - 05:06
we re short fiction on short nonfiction poetry.
- 05:07 - 05:09
So you could expect that we're gonna be reading about
- 05:09 - 05:13
1 to 2 short works per week with those short
- 05:13 - 05:15
works. We're gonna be doing different activities.
- 05:16 - 05:17
It's going to depend on the work honestly.
- 05:18 - 05:20
But a lot of it's going to be connecting that
- 05:20 - 05:21
work to something happening.
- 05:22 - 05:25
History or it's gonna be taking a look at the
- 05:25 - 05:26
tone of the author.
- 05:26 - 05:29
Or it's gonna be trying to figure out about the
- 05:29 - 05:32
author a lot of times, those sorts of things.
- 05:33 - 05:34
So we'll have.
- 05:34 - 05:37
Pdf ce of all the readings that will be posted
- 05:37 - 05:39
two teams and then also sent you a pdf here,
- 05:39 - 05:43
the daily I'm also gonna have audio files, all the
- 05:43 - 05:45
readings that I send out to the email and then
- 05:46 - 05:47
tried also post those two teams as well.
- 05:48 - 05:50
Ah, lot of the audio recordings you're naming me, reading
- 05:51 - 05:54
the stories and those air really good to listen to,
- 05:54 - 05:56
because I can fill in a lot of blanks for
- 05:57 - 05:59
you, especially if you're not directly in the classroom.
- 06:00 - 06:02
I could fill in a lot of stuff for you
- 06:02 - 06:05
in those recordings on I do.
- 06:05 - 06:08
I pause, reading and I say, Hey, you know, in
- 06:08 - 06:10
order for us to understand this better, I just want
- 06:10 - 06:12
to let you know this fact, or I want to
- 06:12 - 06:15
let you know this about the author things like that.
- 06:15 - 06:16
So they're really good to listen to.
- 06:18 - 06:21
Um, Then, uh, in addition to that all works is
- 06:21 - 06:25
gonna be a work for those short works of fiction.
- 06:25 - 06:27
Nonfiction poetry is gonna be turned in.
- 06:28 - 06:29
He turned it in dot com.
- 06:30 - 06:32
So we're gonna use turn in a lot, Not just
- 06:33 - 06:34
for bigger writing assignments.
- 06:34 - 06:37
We're gonna be using that for, like, pretty much every
- 06:37 - 06:40
single assignment, because it's just a way of keeping everything
- 06:40 - 06:41
together in the same place.
- 06:42 - 06:44
So pretty much all that works committee turned in a
- 06:45 - 06:47
turn it in dot com and then we'll have a
- 06:47 - 06:49
few things that are turned in me ago Formative as
- 06:49 - 06:52
well. So that's something that I'll give you a heads
- 06:52 - 06:53
up on a Obviously, if you're gonna be doing the
- 06:54 - 06:55
work and go formative, you know that it's probably could
- 06:56 - 06:56
return to envy ago Formative.
- 06:57 - 07:00
Um, but if you're doing it on a pdf or
- 07:00 - 07:01
something, it's probably gonna be treated it dot com.
- 07:02 - 07:05
So So that's how the in person procedures we're gonna
- 07:05 - 07:08
work for those with the learning.
- 07:08 - 07:10
If we moved to that, it's just going to basically
- 07:10 - 07:12
be I'm gonna cut it down to one short work
- 07:12 - 07:15
per week instead of 1 to 2.
- 07:15 - 07:18
And then it's gonna really important for you to listen
- 07:19 - 07:23
to the audio off reading story because that's where I'm
- 07:23 - 07:25
going to get you the information you need to know.
- 07:25 - 07:26
So again, if you go to if we go to
- 07:27 - 07:30
the learning and we're all any learning, listen to the
- 07:30 - 07:34
audio recordings of greeting story that's gonna be, like, really,
- 07:34 - 07:37
really import less important, one more in class, I will
- 07:38 - 07:39
say, when we're in person, I can fill in a
- 07:39 - 07:42
lot more for you here in class.
- 07:42 - 07:45
But when we're any learning, you just kind of have
- 07:45 - 07:46
to listen to the audio recordings.
- 07:46 - 07:47
That's how it goes.
- 07:48 - 07:50
We're also gonna be utilizing the message boards attorney did
- 07:50 - 07:53
a lot more, as was saying, with going to you
- 07:53 - 07:55
learning. So just expect that you're gonna be posted to
- 07:56 - 07:57
the message for it's a lot more about what you're
- 07:57 - 08:02
reading. And then I also want to talk about literature
- 08:02 - 08:07
circles. Letter to circles are something I'm really excited about.
- 08:07 - 08:10
It's, uh, basically 2 to 3 days per week.
- 08:11 - 08:13
You get together in a group of between four and
- 08:13 - 08:16
six people and everybody has a different role each week.
- 08:17 - 08:19
And as we're completing bigger literary works, things like not
- 08:20 - 08:23
novels or plays or things like that, you're gonna be
- 08:23 - 08:25
working through the novel with the same group of people.
- 08:26 - 08:28
And as was saying, each person has a different role
- 08:28 - 08:30
each week to complete your own work.
- 08:30 - 08:34
You turn that nb eternity in dot com, and then
- 08:34 - 08:35
we get together once a week and we talk about
- 08:35 - 08:38
it. So you're bringing your own work to the table.
- 08:39 - 08:41
You know, I'm nobody's relying on any any other person
- 08:42 - 08:45
really to do all the work on, and everybody gets
- 08:45 - 08:47
to discuss what they were able to find in the
- 08:47 - 08:50
work. And everybody kind of has a unique perspective.
- 08:51 - 08:51
That's pretty cool.
- 08:52 - 08:56
I really like doing director circles with you guys, so
- 08:57 - 08:59
you know that Texas really, really small.
- 09:00 - 09:02
But I just wanted to let you guys know that
- 09:03 - 09:05
your work in literature circles again is going to be
- 09:05 - 09:06
your own work.
- 09:07 - 09:10
So there's no relying on somebody else to do the
- 09:10 - 09:10
work for you.
- 09:10 - 09:12
You are going to be expected to read the material,
- 09:13 - 09:13
get that work done.
- 09:14 - 09:17
That is your individual work every single week because yours
- 09:17 - 09:18
is gonna be unique from somebody else's.
- 09:19 - 09:22
So there's not gonna be any copying that's allowed.
- 09:22 - 09:25
There's not gonna be any kind shortcuts you can take
- 09:25 - 09:25
on that.
- 09:25 - 09:26
You have to do the work yourself.
- 09:27 - 09:30
You That role is you need to do that week.
- 09:30 - 09:31
So got to make sure that it gets done.
- 09:32 - 09:34
In addition to that, I'm also gonna hold you accountable
- 09:34 - 09:37
because your group will have a discussion director every week.
- 09:37 - 09:41
And the discussion director will be asking questions so you'll
- 09:41 - 09:42
be expected to answer those discussion director questions.
- 09:43 - 09:45
So you'll only be able to do that if you
- 09:45 - 09:45
actually read the story.
- 09:46 - 09:48
So that's gonna be another way that I sort of
- 09:48 - 09:49
hold you accountable for that work.
- 09:50 - 09:53
Uh, the only difference with the learning literature circles is
- 09:53 - 09:55
that obviously you're doing the work at home on your
- 09:55 - 09:57
own. You're not working with other people in the same
- 09:58 - 09:58
room with you.
- 09:59 - 10:02
But then also with the discussion director, questions could be
- 10:02 - 10:05
really important that you post them the answers to those
- 10:05 - 10:07
questions to the message board.
- 10:07 - 10:09
So we'll talk a little more about that if that
- 10:09 - 10:09
does happen.
- 10:10 - 10:12
But you're basically every week going to have the discussion
- 10:12 - 10:14
director questions posted to the message word.
- 10:15 - 10:17
And then you're gonna be expected to reply with your
- 10:17 - 10:20
answers to those questions so that literature circles are gonna
- 10:20 - 10:21
work to go to you learning.
- 10:21 - 10:22
All right, we don't What are you learning?
- 10:22 - 10:23
It will just be in person.
- 10:23 - 10:24
Still will be a little easier.
- 10:26 - 10:28
Let's continue on and talk a little bit about weekly
- 10:28 - 10:32
writing. So every single week on Fridays, we're gonna focus
- 10:32 - 10:33
on a writing task.
- 10:34 - 10:37
And for the first quarter, the writing task is going
- 10:37 - 10:37
to be free.
- 10:37 - 10:41
You to edit an essay on Animal Farm within the
- 10:41 - 10:45
first week of school are the first maybe about 10
- 10:45 - 10:47
days of schools they were gonna be writing in the
- 10:47 - 10:49
first draft of an essay on Animal Farm.
- 10:49 - 10:51
We're gonna be doing it all kind of one shot.
- 10:52 - 10:55
We're gonna be writing the essay in one class, period.
- 10:56 - 10:58
Whatever you get done is your first draft.
- 10:59 - 11:01
You're turning that into the internet in dot com.
- 11:01 - 11:03
We're gonna be using that first draft as a jumping
- 11:03 - 11:04
off point.
- 11:04 - 11:07
You're going to be editing that into a second draft.
- 11:07 - 11:09
Then I'm going to get your feedback on that second
- 11:09 - 11:10
draft and then you gotta be editing it.
- 11:11 - 11:14
Finally, 1/3 draft after we do appear added as well.
- 11:14 - 11:16
So that's where we focused on first semester.
- 11:16 - 11:18
Is that Animal Farm s A To help you be
- 11:18 - 11:20
ableto write about literature on.
- 11:21 - 11:24
And then after that, during orders 23 and four, we're
- 11:24 - 11:26
gonna be doing something called 20% Time, which is a
- 11:26 - 11:26
research project.
- 11:27 - 11:30
And you're gonna be researching a an issue in the
- 11:31 - 11:33
world, basically something that you believe needs to be solved
- 11:33 - 11:35
as faras world problem.
- 11:36 - 11:38
And you're gonna be finding what people believed to be
- 11:38 - 11:39
the best solutions to that problem.
- 11:40 - 11:42
And then you're going to be doing projects based on
- 11:42 - 11:43
that research that you do.
- 11:43 - 11:45
So we'll talk a little more about that when we
- 11:45 - 11:45
get to it.
- 11:45 - 11:48
But writing, writing workers, basically it's gonna be all do
- 11:49 - 11:52
the internet in dot com uh, within like a week
- 11:52 - 11:54
of us assigning it basically.
- 11:54 - 11:57
So if I assigned you something on Friday, it's going
- 11:57 - 11:59
to do via turn it in dot com that Thursday
- 12:00 - 12:02
expected you to have something done on it.
- 12:02 - 12:06
By that, um, and then the due dates on those
- 12:06 - 12:09
things will be communicated be a daily email and the
- 12:09 - 12:10
team's posts, too.
- 12:10 - 12:12
So when we go to the learning or if we
- 12:12 - 12:15
go to you learning, I should say, basically, the only
- 12:15 - 12:18
difference is that we're to be doing two drafts of
- 12:18 - 12:21
the animal firm s A rather than three.
- 12:22 - 12:25
And then we would only dio 20% time for Borders
- 12:25 - 12:25
two and three.
- 12:26 - 12:29
We wouldn't be doing the fourth quarter project if we
- 12:29 - 12:30
go to learning.
- 12:30 - 12:31
So that's really the only difference.
- 12:32 - 12:35
Other than that you'll have basically the same tasks to
- 12:35 - 12:39
do. So let's talk a little bit about no red
- 12:40 - 12:44
ink. So hopefully you all remember no reading.
- 12:45 - 12:47
If you were here last year with Miss Loads, you
- 12:47 - 12:51
would have worked on Reddick, and we're gonna have a
- 12:51 - 12:52
continuing your work with already.
