Hi. My name is Madison Butler, and this is my
- 00:03 - 00:05
statement of purpose video for Professor Marks Class.
- 00:08 - 00:11
So first, I want to say that I am currently
- 00:11 - 00:14
criminal Justice Major, but unfortunately, I have to transfer to
- 00:15 - 00:18
the Ohio State University because I wanted to, um, changed
- 00:19 - 00:22
my major to criminology, which focuses more on sociology and
- 00:22 - 00:26
psychology rather than corrections in the police system.
- 00:27 - 00:31
But I will be majoring in criminology and mining in
- 00:31 - 00:32
Holocaust and genocide studies.
- 00:34 - 00:39
So the reason why I'm interested in this started ever
- 00:39 - 00:42
since I was a little because I knew exactly what
- 00:42 - 00:43
I wanted to be and how I'd get there.
- 00:44 - 00:46
Of course, while getting older, I started to really grasp
- 00:47 - 00:51
what my future meant to me and, um, started to
- 00:51 - 00:52
change the way I thought about everything.
- 00:54 - 00:56
I have always loved watching crime shows in serial killer
- 00:56 - 01:01
documentaries, which is pretty morbid, I know, But, um, my
- 01:01 - 01:04
goal, ever since finding that passion was to graduate from
- 01:04 - 01:09
college with a masters in criminal psychology or criminology, um,
- 01:09 - 01:12
I wanted to be a profiler, which is basically somebody
- 01:13 - 01:17
who, um investigates a criminal and gets more into the
- 01:17 - 01:18
mind of why they're committing their crimes.
- 01:20 - 01:24
Um, so my top goal is to either work with
- 01:24 - 01:29
the FBI, the CIA, or do research internationally, Um, which
- 01:29 - 01:31
corresponds with my minor.
- 01:31 - 01:33
So I'd be able to go to either Germany or
- 01:33 - 01:38
Poland and understand, like, what happened during the Holocaust and
- 01:38 - 01:39
why they did what they did.
- 01:39 - 01:44
Um, a resource that was used in first, your experience
- 01:44 - 01:46
that I thought would help a lot with this was
- 01:47 - 01:47
the four year plan.
- 01:48 - 01:51
Because I think this will guide me throughout my four
- 01:51 - 01:53
years to ensure that I'm taking all the classes that
- 01:54 - 01:56
I need to graduate on time and ensuring the knowledge
- 01:56 - 01:59
that I will need, um to go into my field
- 01:59 - 01:59
of work.
- 02:03 - 02:06
So question to how your major minor courses help you
- 02:06 - 02:07
achieve that goal.
- 02:08 - 02:10
So I believe that my major and minor courses will
- 02:11 - 02:14
help me achieve my goal because, um, I can dive
- 02:14 - 02:18
deeper into the knowledge in the field, and this will
- 02:18 - 02:21
help me better perform my job and be able to
- 02:21 - 02:24
truly understand what I have to do and how we
- 02:24 - 02:27
go about going getting the information that I need, Um,
- 02:28 - 02:31
another resource that was used in this class that I
- 02:31 - 02:33
thought would help me a lot was becoming a learner
- 02:33 - 02:37
textbook. Um, I really enjoyed reading this.
- 02:38 - 02:41
I thought it helped a lot, especially, um, comparing learning,
- 02:42 - 02:43
being a learner and being a student.
- 02:44 - 02:47
And I now understand that I really need to, um,
- 02:50 - 02:54
understand the criteria more than just studying and then forgetting
- 02:55 - 02:55
it after the class.
- 02:56 - 02:58
And I think this will help me succeed eventually immensely
- 02:58 - 02:58
in my future.
- 03:00 - 03:03
Okay, so question three.
- 03:04 - 03:06
How are your general education courses Help you achieve that
- 03:07 - 03:10
goal. Because there's so many general education courses out there.
- 03:11 - 03:13
It is so easier for me to find classes that
- 03:14 - 03:16
will help me with my major minor or just other
- 03:16 - 03:17
interests that I have.
- 03:18 - 03:19
So I'm not salute.
- 03:19 - 03:21
We focused on one subject for my four years.
- 03:22 - 03:27
Um, and some general education classes that I think are
- 03:27 - 03:31
really, um, important are the writing speaking in science classes,
- 03:32 - 03:36
um, writing, especially now that most of us are online,
- 03:37 - 03:40
you have to be able to right and relate to
- 03:40 - 03:43
so many different age groups and, um, so many different
- 03:44 - 03:44
types of people.
- 03:45 - 03:50
So I think it's really, uh, important to grasp that
- 03:50 - 03:56
concept and speaking um, you know, you and I think
- 03:56 - 03:59
in many professional lines of work you have to be
- 03:59 - 04:04
able to speak to different age groups and, um, different
- 04:05 - 04:05
size crowds.
- 04:05 - 04:11
Bigger, small and lastly, science because of what's happening, you
- 04:11 - 04:13
know, in the world today, I think it's really important
- 04:14 - 04:18
that people start to understand, um, diseases and viruses more
- 04:18 - 04:21
so weaken, help cure them and find a cure for
- 04:22 - 04:23
them and vaccines.
- 04:24 - 04:29
Um, so yeah, so And question number four how your
- 04:29 - 04:32
experiences at Westchester help you develop as an ethical problem
- 04:32 - 04:37
solver. Um, I believe my experiences at Westchester any other
- 04:37 - 04:41
college while helping develop as an ethical problem solver because
- 04:41 - 04:46
of how many opportunities colleges offer you especially, um, with
- 04:47 - 04:51
the involvement fair and with other clubs and organizations, uh,
- 04:52 - 04:53
that the schools have to offer.
- 04:54 - 04:56
I know these will help me get insight, thio, clubs,
- 04:57 - 05:01
extracurriculars, internships and jobs that help me give me, Give
- 05:01 - 05:05
me a kickstart, Thio getting to the community and, uh,
- 05:06 - 05:07
to help me finding a path to get a new
- 05:08 - 05:11
job. Um, so all in all, I think for sure
- 05:11 - 05:13
experience has taught me so much throughout the whole semester
- 05:14 - 05:16
has helped me grow not only as a student but
- 05:16 - 05:16
as a learner.
- 05:17 - 05:22
And I really appreciate what all the professors did to
- 05:22 - 05:26
help online learning Be a little bit better.
- 05:26 - 05:28
Um, so thank you.
