Hello, this is Janice Forster from Arizona State University.
- 00:06 - 00:07
Before we begin,
- 00:07 - 00:10
I would like to thank you for tuning into my presentation.
- 00:12 - 00:16
The purpose of this video is to provide you with an overview of the following,
- 00:16 - 00:17
my community,
- 00:18 - 00:19
defining problems,
- 00:19 - 00:20
possibilities,
- 00:21 - 00:23
my professional identity
- 00:23 - 00:25
in the proposal I created.
- 00:28 - 00:33
The community I focused on is Stockton California, where I now reside.
- 00:33 - 00:37
I am a 27 year old female that was born and raised in sacramento California,
- 00:37 - 00:40
which is about 30 miles north of Stockton's.
- 00:41 - 00:46
Growing up. My family did not have much money, so we spent most of our free time
- 00:46 - 00:50
in the outdoors, a place where I learned to survive off the land.
- 00:50 - 00:51
Although
- 00:51 - 00:53
it was for survival back then,
- 00:55 - 00:57
my hobbies still include hunting,
- 00:57 - 00:58
fishing and gardening.
- 00:59 - 01:03
My personal goal is to complete my bachelor's at A. S. U.
- 01:04 - 01:08
And begin working as a social worker in the stockton area.
- 01:09 - 01:13
I hope to have a positive impact on my surrounding community
- 01:13 - 01:14
and work to make
- 01:14 - 01:17
the world a better place for all beings.
- 01:18 - 01:20
The United States Census Bureau
- 01:20 - 01:23
revealed that Stockton California had a population of
- 01:24 - 01:26
745,000
- 01:28 - 01:32
And 424 residents in 2022
- 01:32 - 01:35
With a median age being 33 years.
- 01:36 - 01:38
The poverty rate amongst
- 01:38 - 01:42
Adults in this location is 17.9
- 01:43 - 01:46
And a 28.1% poverty rate for Children.
- 01:47 - 01:51
In regard to this community, I conducted a community scam which revealed
- 01:52 - 01:56
a gap in services for adults and Children.
- 01:57 - 01:59
After speaking with Sarah Winfrey,
- 01:59 - 02:01
a social worker in the Stockton area.
- 02:02 - 02:03
I found that there's a lack of
- 02:03 - 02:07
community resources such as access to higher education
- 02:07 - 02:11
and job opportunities which can further contribute to poverty.
- 02:12 - 02:17
I found Winfrey spent much of her time helping clients find jobs in the local area
- 02:18 - 02:22
in helping Children apply for higher education, making it harder for
- 02:22 - 02:24
for her as a social worker
- 02:25 - 02:26
to serve their community.
- 02:27 - 02:31
After discussing the necessity of building a career workshop
- 02:31 - 02:34
and the implications of not having a career workshop,
- 02:35 - 02:36
I developed empathy
- 02:36 - 02:40
empathy for those struggling with financial security
- 02:40 - 02:41
as it creates many barriers,
- 02:41 - 02:46
such as maintaining stable housing and providing nutritious meals
- 02:46 - 02:47
for one's family.
- 02:49 - 02:50
In response, I will address
- 02:51 - 02:56
this ongoing issue of financial struggle many members of this community face.
- 03:00 - 03:03
In response, I will address the ongoing issue of financial
- 03:04 - 03:09
insecurity for the adult and adolescent population of stockton California
- 03:10 - 03:13
through the community career in higher education workshop,
- 03:13 - 03:15
which serves to teach underprivileged,
- 03:16 - 03:18
underprivileged community members
- 03:18 - 03:21
about applying for local jobs and creating resumes
- 03:22 - 03:24
and applying to higher educational schools
- 03:25 - 03:27
in applying for financial aid.
- 03:28 - 03:33
The California Student Aid Commission has extensive policies
- 03:33 - 03:37
located on their website that reference policy A B
- 03:37 - 03:41
1456 known as Student Financial Aid
- 03:41 - 03:43
cal Grant Reform Act,
- 03:44 - 03:46
which works to fill the
- 03:47 - 03:48
gaps of the
- 03:48 - 03:51
current financial aid policy
- 03:51 - 03:53
to better serve those in need
- 03:53 - 03:54
of aid
- 03:56 - 03:58
this workshop.
- 03:59 - 04:02
This works to make financial aid approval more
- 04:02 - 04:04
accessible among all ages
- 04:04 - 04:06
of those considering college,
- 04:07 - 04:10
a community perception that makes surfaces like this
- 04:10 - 04:14
difficult to access is a lack of awareness and community resources
- 04:15 - 04:18
While speaking to social service member
- 04:18 - 04:19
Sarah Winfrey,
- 04:19 - 04:22
she mentioned that much of her time is used searching
- 04:22 - 04:26
for resources on her own time rather than helping more clients
- 04:27 - 04:31
to better respond to this mental crisis and provide those in need
- 04:31 - 04:36
with the resources and tools they need to better their current life situation.
- 04:36 - 04:40
More community centers, career sites and services are needed
- 04:41 - 04:43
to better obtain a job
- 04:43 - 04:45
or education
- 04:45 - 04:47
to better support their families. Financial,
- 04:49 - 04:52
I am connected to this challenge because my family
- 04:52 - 04:55
and I have experienced financial insecurity throughout my life
- 04:56 - 05:02
and it has posed many difficulties for my parents as well as myself as I got older
- 05:02 - 05:05
and wanted to further my education beyond a high school level
- 05:09 - 05:11
California Student Aid Commission,
- 05:12 - 05:14
Government organizations
- 05:14 - 05:15
fast to
- 05:15 - 05:16
indeed
- 05:17 - 05:20
Glassdoor snag a job and nonprofits address
- 05:20 - 05:23
the same topics as my current innovation.
- 05:23 - 05:26
However, they can be hard to navigate for new year
- 05:26 - 05:27
users
- 05:27 - 05:29
that are unaware of their skill set
- 05:30 - 05:33
according to California Student Aid Commission.
- 05:33 - 05:37
They focus on transforming lives by creating educational opportunities
- 05:37 - 05:38
for the state's
- 05:39 - 05:40
diverse population,
- 05:41 - 05:44
driving its social and economic well being. To ensure
- 05:45 - 05:46
a promising future for all
- 05:49 - 05:53
the innovation I created was an outline website that provides
- 05:53 - 05:57
community members with local job listings and educational opportunities.
- 05:58 - 06:01
This site also includes video resources and documents
- 06:01 - 06:04
to show users how to create a resume,
- 06:05 - 06:07
receive financial aid through fast to
- 06:09 - 06:13
and applied for scholarships if they so choose to further their education.
- 06:13 - 06:16
I chose this innovation because not only would
- 06:16 - 06:18
it save time for social workers like Winfrey,
- 06:19 - 06:22
but it would better support the overall community
- 06:22 - 06:26
in ensuring people are working and able to pay for safe and stable housing.
- 06:27 - 06:30
This innovation has evolved from originally being an
- 06:30 - 06:33
in school job fair to an online resource
- 06:34 - 06:35
where I will be able to help a larger,
- 06:36 - 06:38
a larger portion of community
- 06:39 - 06:43
with the help from my classmates and professor, I was able to make,
- 06:44 - 06:48
take their thoughts and concerns into consideration.
- 06:48 - 06:50
I chose to change the format of this job
- 06:50 - 06:54
fair due to many schools implementing covid restrictions,
- 06:54 - 06:56
which would make it harder
- 06:56 - 06:57
to host this event.
- 06:59 - 07:01
Having an online jobs resource.
- 07:02 - 07:03
We'll also ensure
- 07:03 - 07:04
those
- 07:05 - 07:09
not enrolled in school can access the information from a local library.
- 07:11 - 07:14
Job fairs are a great way to provide underserved youth in their families with
- 07:14 - 07:17
a variety of employment options that are
- 07:17 - 07:20
available within the stockton California area.
- 07:21 - 07:21
This allows
- 07:22 - 07:25
you to learn about resources available while also
- 07:25 - 07:28
educating them about searching for a job.
- 07:28 - 07:31
Having a job at a young age can ultimately help
- 07:31 - 07:36
reduce the financial stress seen in families of underserved communities.
- 07:36 - 07:38
This idea would be great as it would
- 07:39 - 07:42
better prepare youth when it comes to working in the future.
- 07:45 - 07:48
I am connected to this community challenge because I
- 07:48 - 07:52
am an observer and educator for the next steps website
- 07:53 - 07:54
every day,
- 07:54 - 07:57
I see more and more people affected by homelessness
- 07:57 - 07:58
homelessness
- 07:59 - 08:03
and not having the tools and resources to find a job that will suit their needs.
- 08:03 - 08:06
Since recognizing this problem, it has
- 08:06 - 08:09
inspired me to pursue social entrepreneurship
- 08:09 - 08:12
and gain empathy for those affected.
- 08:12 - 08:13
Ultimately,
- 08:13 - 08:17
this has led me to the solution of innovating the next steps website
- 08:18 - 08:21
as a future future social worker,
- 08:21 - 08:25
contributing a solution to this problem is absolutely necessary.
- 08:26 - 08:28
It is my duty to serve others in need.
- 08:28 - 08:32
And I can do that by providing the underserved community
- 08:32 - 08:33
with job listings that
- 08:34 - 08:37
fit their skill set and provide them with the educational
- 08:37 - 08:41
opportunities that will allow them to advance in their lives.
- 08:43 - 08:45
My purpose as a professional
- 08:45 - 08:50
is to provide underserved youth and their families with safe and stable housing
- 08:50 - 08:53
to ensure they meet their full potential.
- 08:53 - 08:56
I would like to use this opportunity
- 08:57 - 09:01
I am given as a future educator to participate
- 09:01 - 09:04
in volunteer work and enhance my next steps
- 09:04 - 09:08
program to provide underserved communities with job listings that
- 09:08 - 09:11
suit their individual skill set and provide them with
- 09:11 - 09:14
the educational opportunities that will allow them to positively
- 09:15 - 09:18
advanced through their life and create a life
- 09:18 - 09:19
that they've dreamt about.
- 09:23 - 09:26
I believe the next steps is something worth investing in
- 09:26 - 09:31
this is because it is realistic and beneficial to users of all ages.
- 09:31 - 09:33
According to Barbara
- 09:33 - 09:34
Mikulski,
- 09:35 - 09:37
each one of us can make a difference.
- 09:37 - 09:39
Together, we make a change
- 09:40 - 09:42
by supporting this innovation,
- 09:42 - 09:44
we can begin to decrease the unemployment
- 09:45 - 09:46
unemployment rates
- 09:46 - 09:48
and help solve the homelessness
- 09:48 - 09:51
crisis in the city of Stockton California.
- 09:52 - 09:52
When this
- 09:53 - 09:55
innovative idea becomes a reality,
- 09:55 - 09:58
social workers will be able to place more of their focus
- 09:59 - 10:03
on serving their clients rather than searching for next steps for their clients.
- 10:04 - 10:05
Having a reliable job
- 10:06 - 10:11
or educational career will allow people to overcome the obstacle of homelessness
- 10:11 - 10:14
in their lives and allow them to develop to their full
- 10:14 - 10:19
potential while being able to provide for themselves and others.
- 10:22 - 10:25
My proposal to you is to get involved
- 10:26 - 10:29
if you are a part of the Stockton community, Next steps
- 10:29 - 10:32
will be on the pursuit of finding volunteers.
- 10:33 - 10:33
You can
- 10:36 - 10:36
gain
- 10:37 - 10:40
and you can also gain community service hours.
- 10:42 - 10:44
If you are not in the immediate area,
- 10:44 - 10:46
there will be other ways to get
- 10:46 - 10:49
involved through social media and fundraising activities.
- 10:50 - 10:53
This will take place through donations to Next step.
- 10:53 - 10:57
There is a link to the donation site on the next steps web page.
- 10:58 - 10:59
In return,
- 10:59 - 11:04
donors will receive a certificate of recognition for their contributions
- 11:04 - 11:08
and recognition on the donors page of the next steps website.
- 11:09 - 11:12
This affects our community because it will provide a
- 11:12 - 11:16
users with empathy, learning and networking opportunities
- 11:17 - 11:21
for our members while directly combating homelessness and job insecurity.
- 11:22 - 11:27
The world is a much better place when we work together to solve community problems
- 11:27 - 11:28
and help each other,
- 11:29 - 11:32
which is the intention of the next steps website.
- 11:33 - 11:36
Having a supportive community is highly beneficial,
- 11:36 - 11:38
especially in times of hardship.
- 11:39 - 11:39
When this
- 11:40 - 11:41
idea becomes a reality,
- 11:41 - 11:44
I will be fulfilled knowing that I helped
- 11:44 - 11:47
to create a positive change in the lives of
- 11:47 - 11:50
others and help them on their path to success.
- 11:53 - 11:57
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about the next steps innovation.
- 11:57 - 11:58
We're together,
- 11:58 - 12:00
we can all make a difference.
