welcome to understanding FA s D. Presented by voice in a million.
- 00:07 - 00:10
We are hoping today that by the end of
- 00:10 - 00:14
this session you will take away with you an understanding
- 00:14 - 00:19
and awareness of FA s d foetal alcohol spectrum disorder
- 00:19 - 00:23
and also strategies for success.
- 00:23 - 00:27
Whether you are a parent, a caregiver or a teacher,
- 00:27 - 00:35
hopefully this session will give you an insight into this brain based disability.
- 00:36 - 00:40
Many of you may know me or have seen me in
- 00:40 - 00:43
my role as creative director for voice in a Million.
- 00:44 - 00:48
Um, and many of you may only have seen that part of me,
- 00:48 - 00:54
but I guess the most important role I have is my role as a mom to my two Children.
- 00:55 - 00:57
I'm lucky to be the adoptive mom of two.
- 00:57 - 01:01
I have a 17 year old son who was adopted from an orphanage in Morocco,
- 01:01 - 01:06
and I have a 13 year old daughter who was a domestic adoption from the UK.
- 01:06 - 01:12
And she's my one with her complex diagnosis of FA S d
- 01:12 - 01:14
a s d a DH d
- 01:14 - 01:18
A learning disability with an I Q under 70
- 01:19 - 01:20
dyslexic
- 01:20 - 01:26
dysp practic many, many, many additional needs which has led me on a journey.
- 01:26 - 01:29
A very long journey to discover
- 01:29 - 01:31
what is FA s d.
- 01:31 - 01:35
What is the future? Where is the training?
- 01:35 - 01:37
Who knows anything about it?
- 01:37 - 01:43
And today I deliver training across the UK to parents, caregivers, professionals,
- 01:44 - 01:46
Um, about something that really,
- 01:46 - 01:52
really needs to be known throughout the community that we all live in,
- 01:52 - 01:53
Um,
- 01:53 - 01:58
and most definitely to professionals who work with Children on a regular basis.
- 01:59 - 02:01
So the key information that we are gonna talk about
- 02:01 - 02:04
today and the key things that I would like,
- 02:04 - 02:06
uh, to be takeaways really are
- 02:07 - 02:11
advice. So the more advice I can give, the better it will be
- 02:12 - 02:13
for you guys, uh,
- 02:13 - 02:20
records how we find the records of information about our Children or our students.
- 02:20 - 02:26
Referrals for assessment and obviously, management ongoing, which is
- 02:26 - 02:28
crucial to success.
- 02:29 - 02:32
Um, so let's now talk about
- 02:33 - 02:33
what is
- 02:34 - 02:36
what did your brain do today?
- 02:36 - 02:38
And this exercise, um,
- 02:38 - 02:43
is in a book called Foetal Alcohol Neurobehavioral Conditions. Understanding
- 02:44 - 02:48
the application of a brain based approach by a lady called Diane Mal.
- 02:48 - 02:51
And and you can find this on Amazon. I'm pretty sure it's,
- 02:52 - 02:55
um, quite inexpensive. Um,
- 02:55 - 02:59
but I think it's really important for people to think about the brain,
- 02:59 - 03:01
think about the brain for a second
- 03:02 - 03:03
and think about
- 03:03 - 03:05
what does your brain look like?
- 03:06 - 03:08
And I say that because I want you to get a
- 03:08 - 03:11
picture in your mind's eye of what your brain looks like
- 03:12 - 03:14
because
- 03:14 - 03:17
we all sort of think about brains. Um,
- 03:17 - 03:20
but maybe we don't actually think about what they really look like.
- 03:20 - 03:23
And if I asked everybody to think about their brain
- 03:23 - 03:25
and then draw a picture of their brain,
- 03:26 - 03:27
I am sure
- 03:28 - 03:31
that everybody's picture of their brain would be different.
- 03:32 - 03:33
And that's the thing, really.
- 03:34 - 03:37
I think I have, like, three questions.
- 03:37 - 03:42
First of all, I think we can all agree Number one, that everybody has a brain.
- 03:43 - 03:44
Secondly,
- 03:44 - 03:46
everybody's brain
- 03:46 - 03:47
is different.
- 03:48 - 03:49
And thirdly,
- 03:50 - 03:52
if everybody's brain is different,
- 03:52 - 03:54
why do we treat everybody
- 03:54 - 03:55
the same?
- 03:56 - 04:01
Why do we expect everybody to be able to achieve the same things if everybody's brain
- 04:02 - 04:02
is different?
- 04:06 - 04:09
And let's talk about this next model, the logic model
