The largest earthquake ever recorded was a magnitude 9.5 in Chile on May 22, 1960.
In Chili the city of Concepción moved 3m in the massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake on 27 Feb 2010. The reason is that the rip in the earths crust moved the city 3 meters to the west. They also say that this earthquake has changed the planets rotation. But only a little bit.
