The largest earthquake ever recorded was a magnitude 9.5 in Chile on May 22, 1960.
In Chili the city of Concepción moved 3m in the massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake on 27 Feb 2010. The reason is that the rip in the earths crust moved the city 3 meters to the west. They also say that this earthquake has changed the planets rotation. But only a little bit.
Fact 4
There are about 500.000 earthquakes a year around the world. They are detected by sensitive instruments. 100.000 of them can be felt but only 100 can cause damages. Each year in Southern California there are 10.000 earthquakes but most of them are not felt by humans.
Oil extraction can cause minor earthquakes. You dont hear a lot of those kind of earthquakes or may never heard of them. Its because oil is generally found in soft and squishy sediments. But when oil gets removed other rocks move in to fill the void which creates mini-seismic events. They are not noticeable to humans.
It´s where the majority of the
Earth's major quakes occur,
as major plateboundaries
collide.
The Pacific Ring of Fire is the most geologically active region of the Earth. It circles the Pacific Ocean and touching the North and South America and East Asia.
Facts 2
Is it possible that San Francisco is moving towards Los Angeles? Yes, San Francisco is moving 2 inches every day towards LA. Its the same pace as the growth of your fingernails. The two sides of the San Andreas fault slip past one another, and the cities will meet in severeal million years.
In these past 15 years the earth has been more seismologically active, says the Missouri University of Science and Technology. But not all seismologist agree. But here are some more facts that could prove it.
An earthquake is the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth crust that creates Seismics waves.
The waves of an area refers to the frequency, type and size of the earthquakes experienced over a period of time.
The deadliest earthquake ever was in January 23, 1556 in Shansi, China. Around 830,000 are estimated to have died.
