Fonteius so that he would be able to run for tribune. He was then elected tribune in 58 B.C.*

- As tribune, Clodius reenacted laws that
forbid execution of a Roman citizen
without trial.
- Clodius also reeastablished guilds for tradesmen, further increasing his power
- Passed a law that forbid Cicero to return to the city and confiscated his property.

Clodius.
Clodius could not prevent the return of Cicero, and
developed an intense rivalry with the optimate Milo.
