Publius Clodius Pulcher

Basic Timeline of Events

Clodius was then brought to

trial for his sacrilege but won

by a narrow aquittal by bribing

the jurors heavily. This is also

when the emnity between him and Cicero

developed.

In 59 B.C he was adopted

into a plebian family by

Fonteius so that he would be able to run for tribune. He was then elected tribune in 58 B.C.*

How Clodius influenced

  • He enacted and reenacted many laws under his position as tribune
  • Caused turmoil and chaos in Rome with his gangs
  • Stained the purity of the Bona Dea by entering

Caused Caesar to divorce his wife Pompeia

  • Forced Cicero into exile for a few years

  • As tribune, Clodius reenacted laws that

forbid execution of a Roman citizen

without trial.

  • Clodius also reeastablished guilds for tradesmen, further increasing his power
  • Passed a law that forbid Cicero to return to the city and confiscated his property.

This year marks the beginning of the downfall for

Clodius.

Clodius could not prevent the return of Cicero, and

developed an intense rivalry with the optimate Milo.
