Our Focus: the Issues

Employment Status

  • There are abandoned homes and people in need of a job within the community, so we propose our organization Build: A Bridge to Build, a social enterprise that will be focused on two prevailing issues that have plagued Sherman and Central Avenue (12206); unemployment and abandoned establishments.

The American Fact Finder

  • In 2010 there was a total of 16,395 people living in the Sherman and Central Avenue (12206) area, and of this number of people about 36.3 % were living below the poverty level.
  • In 2015, there were 11,407 people that are 16 years of age and older that were employed in this area. There are about 7,056 individuals that were in the civilian labor force; 5,943 are employed, and 1,113 are unemployed.

The Truth About American Unemployment (Furman, 2016)

How We Plan to Increase Employability?

By providing job training that allows residents to gain skill sets necessary for the labor market!

After clients have completed their job training and received their certification of completion, they will then be referred to construction agencies for hiring opportunities.

The training will be free of service for clients!

Our Focus: the Issues

What Build; A Bridge to Build will primarily be doing is providing the residents of the Sherman and Central Avenue area with training in construction work, a trade of which only 270 residents in this area are currently employed under (American, 2015). By doing this we will not only be making these residents marketable and employable in the workforce, we will also be increasing the participation rate in the workforce and providing the community with workers that can build on some of the abandoned homes of the community.

Discussion Questions

  • How effective do you think our social enterprise will be?
  • What problems may arise?
  • What are other possible companies can we collaborate with?
  • Is this an organization you would refer your clients too?
  • What affects do you think our social enterprise will have 10 years after inception?
  • Do you think we are missing anything?
  • How realistic do you think "BUILD," is?
  • How successful do you think our profits will be ?
  • How should we promote our business?

How Housing Will Be Worked on?

  • By working collaboratively with construction agencies that will agree to work on the abandoned houses in the neighborhood of Sherman and Central Ave.
  • This will also bring revenue to the community and create more sustainable living environments for residents.
