Writing task:

Using the devices you have chosen for your bingo card, write a detailed description of a tropical island.

You must try to use as many of the devices on your bingo card as you can.

The blistering, boiling sand sizzled my toes like a sausage as I walked towards the water. The trees were dancing in the slight breeze as the waves softly embraced the beach.

If you have been given a RED piece of paper you must write a negative description of the island

If you have been given a BLUE piece of paper you must write a positive description of the island

Literary devices

Draw a 3x3 square in your books. In each square, write one of the devices below. You cannot have the same one more than once.

Chapter 1 so far...

We are introduced to Ralph and Piggy at the start of the novel.

They immediately form an alliance to one another.

It has also become clear that they have survived a plane crash and now must fend for themselves with NO adults.

The boys then begin to shed their clothes. What could this be a symbol of?

Shedding their old lives, taking off a 'uniform'

What are the connotations of a 'uniform'?

  • They discover the conch (shell) and Ralph blows it in order to gather other possible survivors.
  • Among these are: twins, Sam and Eric; a group of choir boys, led by a very stern Jack Merridrew; Simon, a choir boy who faints and many young children that remain nameless.
  • Jack and Ralph argue over who is to be chief until Ralph is voted in due to his possession of the conch.
  • Jack and the choir boys are assigned the job of hunting.
  • Ralph, Jack and Simon begin an ‘expedition’ to confirm they are on an island; Piggy is banned from the trek and generally teased throughout the section, despite his clear common sense.
