The Things They Carried: Notes

Detail 3

Norman Bowker was depressed and lost after the war. This lead to him to hang himself. Tim O'brien wrote about him to in his words "makes good on Norman Bowker's silence."

Detail 2

Kiowa's death in Vietnam had a big affect on some of the men, especially Norman Bowker. Kiowa was his friend. Norman had trouble finding meaning in his life after the war. He sent many depressing letters to Tim O'brien. This may not be true, but there could be some emotional truth to it. Perhaps O'brien had a friend who experienced similar things or maybe O'brien himself felt this meaningless feeling when he returned from the war.

"Notes"

Theme: War changes people.

Detail 1

Norman writes a letter about how he's changed. He says he feels as though he was killed in Vietnam. The night Kiowa died he felt like he sank into the sewage with him. After returning home he felt the difference in the way people treated him. He thought there was something they were afraid to ask him.
