Scientists

Ernst Mayr

7/5/1904-2/3/2005

He was born in Germany but lived in America for some of his life.

His scientific career included studies of systematics, evolutionary biology, ornithology, and philosophy of biology

Sewall Wright

12/21/1889 – 3/03/1988

Sewall was an American geneticist known for his work on evolutionary theory. He was also a founder of population genetics, which was a very important step towards modern genetics.

In today's science

Stephen Gould

9/10/1941– 5/20/2002

He was an American scientist who studied many different fields, including evolution. He served as the president of the Society for the Study of Evolution from 1990-91.

Herbert Spencer

4/27/1820 – 12/08/1903

Herbert was an English philosopher, biologist, anthropologist, and sociologist. He is best known for the phrase "survival of the fittest" which, we often hear today.

Ernst Mayr's findings are very important in today's science. Because of his amazing work scientists are able to classify the many species we have discovered and they are able to trace their origins. This is very important for many fields, even medical research.

Mayr

One of his more popular books was Systematics and the Origin of Species (1942)

Mayr is sometimes credited with inventing the modern philosophy of biology.

He was able to answer many questions that other scientists were not because of his unique understanding of science. Mayr created the "modern synthesis" in the late 1930's which was able to combine Mendel's theory of heredity with Darwin's theory of evolution. This was an amazing achievement because it has allowed scientists to classify species and trace their origins.
