Formal tests are given to students to test their proficiency on a subject. Two types of formal tests are norm-referenced and criterion-referenced. They are both formal assessments but have distinct differences.

Norm-Referenced
Content-
Determines a students knowledge of a specific content area. Scoring is in relation to the domain of the content.
Bell-shaped curve-
Follows a bell-shaped curve that represents the norm or average performance. The range will show you if a student is deficient, average, or superior in the material.
They are both formal assessments.
Comparison-
Do not compare a students results with other students. The test is used to see if a student knows the content or not.
