Location

The two plates that make up the Puerto Rico Trench is the Caribbean and the North American Plate.

Formation

The trench began to form 70 million years ago. The Caribbean and North American tectonic plates are scraping by each other, forming a huge transform fault. The Caribbean plate is shifting east, while the North American plate is shifting west.

Facts

  • Since the deepest part of the trench is about 8,000 meters its extremely hard to study.
  • The trench makes it the deepest part in the Atlantic Ocean.
  • The trench is about 5 miles under sea level.

In addition to the transform fault, the Puerto Rico Trench also has a subduction zone. The North American plate is being subducted beneath the Caribbean plate.
