Nursing schools use a wide variety of technology and social media platforms to create a successful and varied learning environment for students.
Nursing programs that utilize social media must continue to make resolutions and improvements within their programs to meet the needs and expectations of their students.
"The Undergraduate Student Handbook for 2013-2014" issued guidelines addressed social networking in the context of posting information that is inappropriate within any social media platform.
There were no guidelines or policies found within the SFMC CON "Faculty-Academic Handbook 2012-2014 addressing the utilization of social media within the academic setting.
"As nursing continues to change and grow as a profession and as a discipline, so must the manner in which we prepare our nurses for today's healthcare challenges... Technology within healthcare organizations has become so widely accepted that academia must incorporate it as part of the educational curriculum and academic preparation" (p. 47).
Different aspects that must be reviewed:
Improvements could be made within SFMC CON and other nursing schools by providing clear guidelines and policies for both faculty and students so they can utilize social media within an appropriate context and facilitate a more engaging learning environment.
It is important for a nursing professor to evaluate and implement learning strategies that will help the student to be successful whether it is in an online learning environment, in a hybrid class, or in a traditional in-seat class.
The online learning environment has the ability to re-envision the delivery of information and classroom interaction. It has the ability to be asynchronous and flexible.
It can use applications such as Skype, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and other social media forums.
"Faculty are reaching for multiple media and hybrid approaches to encourage student-centered learning, maximize teaching effectiveness, and take advantage of the best on-campus and online teaching and learning" (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2012, p. 410).
Using technological tools is not only becoming the norm in everyday living, but also the expectation of individuals.
Embracing social media within nursing education can help promote active learning and provide a different means of communicating in contrast to a teacher centered lecture.
