Guidelines for Use of Social Media

Nursing programs that utilize social media must continue to make resolutions and improvements within their programs to meet the needs and expectations of their students.

  • Nursing education has existed for more than 160 years
  • The classroom and learning environment initially was built around the teacher who would deliver the content to the students
  • Today nursing education is seen through many diverse settings
  • Nursing education continues to embrace change

"The Undergraduate Student Handbook for 2013-2014" issued guidelines addressed social networking in the context of posting information that is inappropriate within any social media platform.

Successful implementation of social media within nursing school

Improvements

There were no guidelines or policies found within the SFMC CON "Faculty-Academic Handbook 2012-2014 addressing the utilization of social media within the academic setting.

"As nursing continues to change and grow as a profession and as a discipline, so must the manner in which we prepare our nurses for today's healthcare challenges... Technology within healthcare organizations has become so widely accepted that academia must incorporate it as part of the educational curriculum and academic preparation" (p. 47).

Evaluate

Different aspects that must be reviewed:

  • Needs assessment of the nursing program
  • Technology infrastructure capabilities
  • current technologies
  • current trends
  • program requirements
  • Student and faculty requirements
  • Financial needs of the nursing program

Improvements could be made within SFMC CON and other nursing schools by providing clear guidelines and policies for both faculty and students so they can utilize social media within an appropriate context and facilitate a more engaging learning environment.

It is important for a nursing professor to evaluate and implement learning strategies that will help the student to be successful whether it is in an online learning environment, in a hybrid class, or in a traditional in-seat class.

Online learning

Advantages to Implementation

The online learning environment has the ability to re-envision the delivery of information and classroom interaction. It has the ability to be asynchronous and flexible.

It can use applications such as Skype, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and other social media forums.

"Faculty are reaching for multiple media and hybrid approaches to encourage student-centered learning, maximize teaching effectiveness, and take advantage of the best on-campus and online teaching and learning" (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2012, p. 410).

Using technological tools is not only becoming the norm in everyday living, but also the expectation of individuals.

Embracing social media within nursing education can help promote active learning and provide a different means of communicating in contrast to a teacher centered lecture.

Disadvantages to Implementation

  • More Options to Engage In Learning
  • Greater Flexibility
  • Increases Ability to Enhance Communication
  • More Students can Attend without In-Seat
  • More Variety to Student's Learning
  • Opportunity for Instant Feedback
  • Promotes Collaboration
  • Facilitates Sharing of Information

Resistance to Implementation Related to:

  • Time Commitment
  • Costs
  • Fear of Retribution Related to Student and Patient Privacy
  • Inadequate Training
  • Ability to Keep Up with Changing Technology
  • Institutions Limiting Policies Related to Technology Use
