Erratics are rocks or boulders that are eroded and left behind by a glacier. Often, erratics are carried over thousands of miles before they are dropped.
Glacial erratics aren't actually formed. You could almost say they're stolen. Because a glacier is so heavy, the glacier can "steal" large rocks as it moves. When the rock is too heavy for the glacier to hold, or the glacier is retreating, it deposits the rock in a place where it wouldn't usually be found.

The best way to know whether a boulder is an erratic or just a rock is to look at its surroundings. A glacial erratic is a boulder usually larger than the type of rock native to the area in which it sits now.
