Relation: Bi loves guava and learned that the actual fruit is an endosprem full of the plant seeds and embryos.

Definition: Alternation of generations is a type of life cycle found in all plants and some algae species. This process involves a multicellular diploid generation called a sporophyte and a multicellular haploid generation called a gametophyte.

Relation: Olo found many seeds that have fallen off of plants and grown in the planters around them.

Definition: The type of egg produced by reptiles, birds, and prototherian (egg-laying) mammals (amniotes), in which the embryo develops inside an amnion. The shell of the egg is either calcium-based or leathery.

Relation: Gy saw this peacock and realized that the female and males look different from each other because of sexual dismorphism.

Definition: reduction in temperature resulting from the evaporation of a liquid, which removes latent heat from the surface from which evaporation takes place. This process is employed in industrial and domestic cooling systems, and is also the physical basis of sweating.

Relation: Olo realized that gas evaporates when it cools in the cold air.

Definition: a state of animal dormancy, similar to hibernation, characterized by inactivity and a lowered metabolic rate, that is entered in response to high temperatures and arid conditions.

Relation: Gy saw that dik diks like to sleep during the hot days.

Relation: Gy saw that many fish lay a lot of eggs and only few survive because of predators in this pond.

Relation: Bi somehow found his way into my integuentary system.

Relation: Gy agreed with the ardvark and said naptime is only fun during the hot summer days.

Relation: Gy liked these leaves and how some were a mix of al three colors green, pink, and white.

Relation: Bi saw how this pond that has been separated from the ocean has gotten polluted overtime killing fish and plants in the area.

Through the process of natural selection, a niche is the evolutionary result of a species' morphological (morphology refers to an organism's physical structure), physiological, and behavioral adaptations to its surroundings.

Relation: Gy loves his animals and these are very prickly and they liked to hide away from the others in the community.

Relation: Gy saw that plants are made of phloems and help the plants survive.

Relation: Olo loves succulents and many succulents are cactuses and they don't need water all the time.

Relation: Gy didn't get too close to the sheep because he did not want to get scrapie.

The name refers to one of the typical characteristics of the group, namely that the seed typically has two embryonic leaves or cotyledons.

Relation: Gy liked this pretty flower that has 5 petals.

Define: Potential mates may be in the same general area but not in the same habitat where they are likely to meet

Relation: Gy on this side of the mountain couldn't figure out how to reach the other Gys on the other side therefore there was habitat isolation.

Definition: Modified roots are roots which change their structures to adapt to their environment.

Relation: Bi found that this bamboo modified its roots to grow around the many lava rocks in the soil.

Relation: Olo felt very small next to the tree with the lichen on the bottom.

Definition: A modified leaf is an adaptation of plant meant for its own survival due to its environmental stress. When a leaf performs functions other than photosynthesis and transpiration, structural changes may occur. Plants may change either the structure of the leaves, the color (to attract insects), or may add spines or thorns to protect itself.

Relation: Olo got burned at the beach and needed his modified leaf aloe vera to help it get better.

Definition: a fibrous protein forming the main structural constituent of hair, feathers, hoofs, claws, horns, etc.

Relation: Gy thought he was a rhino because he has a "horn" of keratin as well on his head.

Relation: Bi found these fish swimming near his feet by the shoreline and was suprised they were so close to the shore.

Relation: Bi while strolling down the Waimea Bay beach that a few unlucky fish were caught during high tide on the beach and got trapped. These fish were very icky because they had started to decompose.

Relation: Gy noticed that the trade winds on the North Shore blew the leaves off of many trees into the stream.

Relation: Bi was glad he wore shoes while walking near the sugar cane field because of the nasty wrappers and moldy bottles around his feet.

Relation: Gy watches these zebras and giraffes be hosts to many insects and parasites.

Definition: the tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes.

Definition: Can refer to differences between individuals or to differences between populations. Mutation is the ultimate source of genetic variation, but mechanisms such as sexual reproduction and genetic drift contribute to it as well.

Relation: Gy found it cool that these pigeons were all the same kind just different variations of colors.

Relation: Gy realized the zoo keeps the lemurs in an environment with steady growth and depletion in numbers and the variation is not allowed because of the same breed in the same area.

Relation: Gy liked the peacocks until they got too close with their big wings.

Relation: Bi liked the waterfall and noticed many protists living on the rocks near the water.

Definition: the process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring. The theory of its action was first fully expounded by Charles Darwin and is now believed to be the main process that brings about evolution.

Relation: Gy found that many cool colored animals (birds in this case) are kept in zoos because of natural selection causing the blue to be easily spotted.

Relation: Gy like many animals finds different things attractive. He and this cat purr the same way.

Relation: Bi knows that bees are good pollinators but he did notice they aren't very good swimmers in the ocean.

Relation: Gy watched as the monkeys groomed the parasites off of each other.

Relation: Olo gets his cars painted because old cars become oxidized do to time in the sun and in elements.

Most of my pictures were taken in Hawaii. I did not want to be in the pictures so say hello to my little friends, Bi, Olo, and Gy. Together they make bi-olo-gy, and will take you on a scavenger hunt of the island and around Tustin.

Any of various antibiotics obtained from penicillium molds (or produced synthetically) and used in the treatment of various infections and diseases

Relation: Olo found out that oranges and other fruits and molds contain penicillin.

Relation: Bi tried to adapt like a crab to the rocks and squeeze to hide from seagulls but failed miserably.

Definition: An adaptation that allows animals to blend in with certain aspects of their environment. Camouflage increases an organism's chance of survival by hiding it from predators.

Relation: Bi found out that these sea urchins have adapted to camoflauge onto the rocks by stepping on one on accident.
