West ray mine was a coal factory...In Plymouth, Nova Scotia. WestRay was owned by Curragh Resources Inc. Witch obtained by both provincial and federal government money to get the mine started and to help support electrical utilities with coal. It opened in Sept. 1991 but it closed 8 months later when it was a site of an underground methane explosion in 1992, killing all 26 working underground at the time
On Saturday May 9 1992 methane gas and coal dust explosions at 5:18 a.m. killed 26 miners just 8 months after it opened... within the first few months they already start having troubles with multiple roof collapse.. Its Canada's worst mining Disaster since 1958 (at the time)... the 15 miners bodies that they found were all dead :(
