Discussion Questions

Places

1. Is there a possibility that Julia could be playing Winston to get him to confess? What are her intentions towards Winston?

2. When Winston and Julia meet at Victory Square, a convoy of Eurasian prisoners are being tortured. Why would they decide to torture prisoners in a public setting?

3. Isn't it both dangerous and ironic how Winston believes she's a spy or a member of the thought police, yet he makes multiple attempts to speak to her? Why do you think he does this?

Book 2

Chapter 1

p. 111-123

Discussion Questions (Cont...)

4. Earlier in the book, Winston thinks about how he would rather die right away than have to confess to the Thought Police and be tortured. He says that there really isn't any point in life if the end was all the same. After receiving the note, why does he suddenly have a desire to keep living?

5. At Victory Square, Winston and Julia hold hands for the first time. Why is this important? What does it symbolize?

My Opinion

  • Julia could be a spy or a member of the thought police or she could be sensing Winston's hate for the party which provokes her to approach him and be an ally
  • Throughout the next chapter, Orwell writes Julia as a character who is crazy about sex and maybe she is approaching Winston for sex, knowing that he probably wont say anything to anyone
  • Julia's note gives him a sense of happiness because it's something new and exciting. It's a relationship he has always wanted.
  • Big Brother finds out about their relationship and they get into big trouble later on in the book.
  • Begins in the Ministry of Truth (where Winston receives the note from Julia) and then he reads it in his cubicle
  • Lunch time in the canteen where everyone gathers and Winston sees Julia but doesn't speak to her at first and then eventually builds up enough courage to sit at her table and converse
  • Community Centre where Winston spends his time just hanging out with everybody and keeping up appearances
  • Victory Square at 19:00, near Big Brother's monument where he sees Julia again and they both hold hands and agree to meet someplace else.
  • Touches on Paddington Station to get to the Countryside

Why did Winston and Julia decide to meet at such a crowded place full of people such as the Victory Square instead of a secluded place knowing that there is always someone watching?

Items/Ideas to Know

  • You never know who the thought police are
  • Public manipulation
  • Winston's feelings towards women
  • Julia's note
  • Keeping up appearances
  • Winston having an ally or giving himself up

Faces/Characters

  • Winston Smith: Main character and protagonist of the story. Believes that Julia is a spy and has a negative view on her and life overall. Decides that he would rather die than have to go through confessing to the Thought Police.

  • Julia (the dark haired girl): An outer party member who works at the records department. Tells Winston she loves him, agrees to meet up with him at Victory Square, and then makes plans to meet again somewhere else. Could possibly be a spy or a member of the thought police?

  • Parsons: Winston's Neighbor who speaks to him about the preparations for Hate Week and is excited for a paper-mache model of Big Brother's head made for the occasion by his daughter's troop of spies.

  • Wilsher: A blonde-headed, young man who interrupted Winston on his way to talk to Julia. Winston wanted to smash a pickaxe into his face.

P.115-116 “It was like trying to make a move at chess when you were already mated. Whichever way you turned, the telescreen faced you.”

Saraf Alam

Quotes

P.122 “The prevailing emotion was simply curiosity. Foreigners, whether from Eurasia or from Eastasia, were a kind of strange animal. One literally never saw them except in the guise of prisoners, and even as prisoners one never got more than a momentary glimpse of them. Nor did one know what became of them, apart from the few who were hanged as war-criminals: the others simply vanished…”
