"Party in the USA" by Miley Cyrus

B

Background on Miley Cyrus

Another song we thought represented the American dream well was “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus. This song can be related to the anxiousness and excitement one feels the first time they enter America. Miley sings about how she isn’t carrying much when she arrives in LA, similar to how some people come here from other countries not bringing much, hoping to find new opportunities. Throughout the song, Miley talks about how they’re playing “her song.” We related this to Walt Whitman’s poem, “I Hear America Singing,” and how the song might represent achieving the American dream. Towards the end of the song, Miley sings about how she wants to go back home, which is relatable to many people as they would start feeling homesick. Then she is singing about how her song is being played and she suddenly feels a lot better. In the end, we thought of “the song,” as representing individualism and how it is helping people achieve what they want. We think that the song is saying that each person will have his/her unique American dream and even though its hard to get there, it would be all worth it in the end.

I hopped off the plane at L.A.X. with a dream and my cardigan

Welcome to the land of fame, excess, whoa! am I gonna fit in?

This can be relatable to people who come to America for new opportunities, not bringing anything. They think they won’t fit in because they come from different countries and different cultures..

This is all so crazy, everybody seems so famous

My tummy's turnin' and I'm feelin' kinda homesick

Too much pressure and I'm nervous

But when the taxmian turns on the radio,

and a Jay-Z song was on

Everyone has doubts about their decisions, but that is not a reason to give up on your dream. Sometimes, you never know whats going to happen but your horrible day but turn good.

Got my hands up, they're playin' my song

And now I'm gonna be okay

Yeah! It's a party in the USA!

Yeah! It's a party in the USA!

She talks about people playing “her song,” which can be relatable to Walt Whitman’s poem. Her song can be an analogy for her American dream. It’s like she hears it and she’s reminded of why she is here in the first place

Feel like hoppin' on a flight, on a flight

Back to my hometown tonight, town tonight

Something stops me every time, every time

The DJ plays my song and I feel alright, right, right

It might be hard to stay motivated at times because you’ll get homesick. At the end, she says the DJ plays her song which makes her feel better again. The song can be something to motivate her to keep working towards her goal and achieving it.

Songs Relating to The American Dream

"Hall of Fame" by The Script

We chose “Hall of Fame,” by The Script to represent the prevailing dream among most Americans. This song sings about how if you work hard for something, there’s nothing that you won’t be able to achieve. In the song, it mentions reaching the hall of fame, which can be analogous to achieving the universal American dream of success, happiness and fiscal independence. It also evokes a theme of perserverence; it's lyrics mention how as long as someone sets their goal and work hard for it, they will be able to achieve anything. We think that the song is saying that the American dream is elusive towards many people, but once they know what they want, as long as they work hard, they’ll find themselves succeeding.
