The fieldwork experience provided an invaluable level of experience and perspective. The experiences focused on the school as a whole and I feel more knowledgeable for it. Through this experience I have come to realize the importance of shared leadership, parallel and distributive, based on need. I also realize that a true learning environment where leadership flourishes takes trust, shared purpose, and open lines of communication and expectations. Teachers must be empowered to lead through clear leadership opportunities, which are essential in promoting teacher leadership.
Throughout this semester I have done fieldwork at Mary E. Phillips High School in Wake County, North Carolina. The purpose of this fieldwork experience is to analyze the school-wide findings encountered in interviews and interactions with the school administration and teachers and data analysis. After analyzing these factors, programming professional development, examination of the Teacher Working Conditions Survey and other artifacts, I have built an action plan for school improvement.
Mary E. Phillips is an alternative school located in Raleigh, N.C. A small population of the students at Phillips have been suspended from their traditional schools, some of which are referrals. Other than the referrals there is an application process. We specialize in small class sizes and have began to implement a 21st century curriculum. Our students experience life factors that have caused them to miss school and get behind, we offer a program that gives them the opportunity to graduate on time by focusing on required coursework, not electives.
