The Mets revealed Harvey's injury as a partially torn UCL in late August, and most club members thought he would elect to undergo Tommy John surgery. Not long after, he underwent the surgery. After over a year of rehab, Matt Harvey returned to pitch in the opening series finale against the Washington Nationals, and got the win.
Tommy John surgery is a surgery to repair an elbow injury caused by the repetitive use of the elbow during the violent motion of throwing a baseball. A torn elbow ligament was the most common reason for having the surgery. BR Bullpen says, "In the surgery, the new tendon is implanted and woven in a figure-eight pattern through holes drilled in the humerus and ulna bones"
The first procedure was performed in 1974 by Dr. Frank Jobe on Tommy John, whom the surgery is named after. John's chances to return to pitching in the Major League was predicted 1 in 100 according to Dr. Jobe. However, Tommy John returned to pitch in the Majors for 13 more years, after going through 18 months of rehab after the surgery.
