What is the problem with muck fires?
The real problem is that muck fires are EVERYWHERE! (in Florida) And once they light, they don’t go out.
- They can last for weeks at a time
- Also, the smoke is extremely damaging to the lungs
In the book when they try to put it out
it makes a swamp like area which mosquito's love and it attracts them.
What is the cause of this?
- The cause of muck fires is because they are made of lignite.
- Lignite is a soft, brown coal showing a little bit of plant structure.
- It is in the middle between bituminous coal and peat, which never runs out. It is always underground which is why the fires are underground.
Fun facts
What is the impact
on the enviornment?
- It can also destroy forest animal's homes, which are mostly trees.
- it can also make the animals go extinct
In the book the muck fire
burnt all of the trees
down
- Muck fires start when lightning strikes a dry area where there is lignite, a brown coal, or rosebud. Also, when people litter in a wooded area (forests) it makes a brown muck that sinks to the ground floor and
- the lignite keeps burning down underground until it hits water.
- Muck is soil rich in carbon-based compounds from dead plants and organisms, usually more than a third of the soil content. Then it clamps together to make lignite.
